paying off OLD debt won't improve your score. the best thing you can do is pay all your current bills on time. :)

I cleared up my credit by getting one of the high interest rate credit cards and paying it off. Then I bought a car and financed a portion and payed it off. The other thing I would recommend is to monitor your credit report carefully. If something wrong is on there you submit a request to remove it and they have to substantiate the claim or remove it. Also things are supposed to drop off after seven years. You are legally entitled to a free credit report each year from each credit reporting agency.

The short answer:

Correctly handle some but not all of your old bad debts. This was the biggest chapeter in my book.

And correctly rebuild credit. There are some amazingly fast ways of doing this. Its part of my consultation service.

Paying off your credit won't clear it up. Negative information stays on your record for 7 years. Even if you pay it all off you will still be looked upon as if you didn't pay any of it off.

Here is what I suggest.

Pull your credit report with Equifax, trans-union, and Experian (one or all of them) and deny all the negative credit information. You can do this online. The credit agency will try to verify the information with the creditor. If the creditor doesn't reply in 30 days (majority of the time they don't) then by law the Credit Bureau is suppose to remove the record. The older the record the less likely the creditor will respond.

There is also a law firm that does the above for you for a nominal fee. http://www.lexingtonlaw.com/

Get a Visa/MC through companies who extend credit to high risk individuals to re-establish your credit. Some offers may require a security deposit.
