What's the best way to reduce credit card debt?
I know so many people say 'stop using the cards!'...but what if that's not an option? My credit card has turned into a monster.... over 17k and I only take home 13k a year. It's not like I use it for frivolous things... I use it for things like dental work, car repairs, and groceries/gas. I have to use it for those things, because after making all my payments, I actually make about 150 dollars *less* a month than what I take home. So does anyone have any ideas for reducing that big credit card, especially any ideas that don't involve bankruptcy??? Please help... I'm too young to have this sort of a debt!

First of all you need to cut up and cancel the credit cards. They are a crutch!

They are good for nothing but getting into debt.

You need to sit down and do a written budget.
Find a second job to pay your bills.

Go to http://www.daveramsey.com and listen to his radio show. He has lots of great advice on money and debt. It doesn't cost a dime to listen.

Yes, you are! Unfortunately, you're the one who got into it and now it must be paid back plus you must have enough money to cover your monthly expenses. You're going to have to do one of two things. Find a job that pays more or get a second job to pay it off and give you the additional money you need to live.

The other thing you might be able to do is look for a transfer offer that will allow you to consolidate your debt at a much lower rate of interest until the debt is paid off. Check every offer that comes your way but don't take a transfer for anything higher than 5.99%.

1. Make more money. Or get a second job. But definitely try to maximize your true value per year.

2. Don't stop using the cards. Get control over the cards. Those are two different things. Read some articles on the web or blogs, or books on managing credit card debt.

3. Live like a pauper. I mean ditch everything except food, clothing, shelter. You'll feel poor for a few weeks, then lavish at your new found cash.

Hope it helps.

While yes you are using this credit card for some important things. You need to cut corners as much as possible to get the card down. Eventually the credit is going to run out and that bill will still be there.

Dental Work - Check with your local dental college they offer dental services at a discounted rate. The free clinic also offers dental services.

Car repairs - If your vehicle is giving you that much havoc best to look for a more reliable used car.

Groceries - Clip coupons and check those rebates you can save lots of money doing this.

Utilities - Save when not in use. turn lights out etc. Use those florescent bulbs.

Start a budget and stick to it.

First you have to cover your expenses somehow- as others said you need to change jobs or get a second job, or get a roommate or find a way to reduce costs.

In terms of the existing debt, the percentage alone is killing you I'm sure and you should do the transfer to 0 percent and you can keep doing this. Suze Orman discusses it at her site.

Those people who say "stop using the cards" are obviously right in their advice. You said it yourself that the debt has grown so if you can't pay the $17K, how do you expect to pay $20K, $30K, etc??? There are non profit agencies that are debt management companies like Consumer Credit Counseling that can help you dig out of your mess over a 3-5 year time frame. It's not bankruptcy but it's a voluntary plan that will eventually look good on your credit report when you have zero debt. It's an option. To take home $13K a year you should be living a $13K lifestyle (or less) if you expect to get out of debt... ever. Start with your budget and figure out what exactly you need versus what you want. It's evident that you have a computer, internet service, phone, and car. Let's look at ways to decrease some of your expenses and/or increase income. Can you take in a roommate? Is your car worth enough money to sell or is it costing more to fix than to replace? Do you have a cell phone? Do you have things you can sell? Can you take on a part time job? Have you called your credit card companies to ask for a lower payment and/or interest rate? Can you get a flexible spending account for your dental expense to pay with tax free money? It doesn't have to be one thing or another... you can mix and match the ideas to fit your lifestyle. I am not saying to go without treating yourself now and then but do it with cash, not credit. Have oatmeal for dinner one night instead of steak. Borrow a book or magazine from the library instead of buying one. Ask friends for coupons for things you use that they don't. You are not the only person in debt so network with others who can help you. Go to a free museum instead of a movie. Grab a candy bar instead of a slice of cheesecake. Make your own coffee instead of going to Starbucks (gas station or wherever). Bring your own lunches to work. Shop at resale shops for clothing. When you save $1 throw it on your credit cards. But, those people are right about not using those credit cards. You didn't get in debt overnight so you won't get out overnight... and especially not without a plan. Think seriously about a professional debt management plan:

Work the weekends. Take the bus to work or find a carpool. Save money where you can and put that into the credit cards payment. Quit charging. Quit repairing vehicle if it keeps breaking down!

Just don't ever owe the IRS!
Known people to have and its not easy!

By doing that, you are digging yourself into a deeper and deeper hole. You have to learn to live within your means. Its that simple and that hard. Why don't you look for a better job or a second job?

bryan l
go and get on a installment loan with a affordable payment plan, also focus on a higher paying job or even take on a second job.
