Mindy C | What's the best way to start building credit? |
I am 20 years old and keep getting rejected for credit cards. The only way to get credit is to start somewhere...so where do I start?? |
|

Since you've already applied and got rejected for credit cards- it's best to temporarily stop applying for credit cards. I know it sounds contrary to getting a credit card but this is because for every credit application you make, a credit check is recorded to the credit reporting bureau(equifax, transunion, etc) and the more requests you make- it looks bad. When you apply for credit, other credit card companies see these checks and of course will also deny you credit. Also, constantly applying for credit cards and at the same time will get you rejected because the credit card companies take it as you are desperate for funds. So, what to do?
The best place to start would be getting one of those prepaid MasterCard's. They work like a credit card and you don't need a credit check. These cards help you establish a credit history because it is recorded in your credit report and so you can start to build up a credit history. Some banks have info about these types of cards. Also, maintain a bank account with sufficient funds. You may wish to speak with a representative from the bank where you have your account about how to start building credit. These ways help show you can handle financial responsibility. Hope this helps and good luck! |

You should get your credit reports from the three credit agencies with FICO score. Make sure that you don't have any wrong or derogatory info. If you have then try to have it corrected. Save $300 each to get a Secured Credit cards from Visa and Master Card. Buy your necessities using these credit cards and pay all your bills in full end of each month. Don't spend money that you don't have. Don't apply for new credit. Keep checking your credit score periodically. |

Talk to a personal banker. They can help you more than anyone. |

Do you have a checking account? Apply for a small loan, keep the money in seperate account, and pay it off. Get a low interest credit card, and keep it paid off. |

Start with a department store card - Mervyn's, Kohl's, etc. Buy something, then be sure to pay it off right away. Also check with you bank & talk to the manager about one of their credit cards. |

I would start by making sure you don' have any debts and that you have a job. Then I would have a checking and saving account with money in them. If that does not work get a card where you basically put money on the Credit card and use it. Once you do that for awhile it will improve your credit score. Go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ and check out your credit score. If it is low you can see why. |

Well you can start with a credit card with a 300 dollar limit. Or you could join a credit union and get a small personal loan. They are really help-full in what you desire. Start small and always pay your payments (on time) and never late. If you do this for 6 months you will establish the beginnings of credit. You can expand from there. You could dive right in with a car loan and a co-signer but I don't recommend that at all. If you have a long running job history and a record of 6 months to a year of making your payments on time you should not need a co-signer. Again... I don't ever recommend a co-signer at all. Go to a credit union. I'm a member of 3 credit unions. They have never refused me. |

to raise credit score
1. Always pay on time or ahead of time.
2. maintain low balances on credit cards
3.To boost your score: Don't charge anything for at least 60 days before applying for a loan
4. keep your total potential debt to earnings load low - If you have a card with a $15000 credit line, you may ask them to reduce it to something more realistic, like $5000.
5. You should have a recent history of both installment or term (Car or house loans) and revolving credit.
6.To boost your score: Don't close unused accounts when you transfer debt.
7.To boost your score: Consider opening another credit-card account or two, or taking out a car loan or small bank loan.
