What's the differnce between a credit card and a debit card? Which is better for shopping online i.e fraud?

i would only use a credit card for shopping on line - if a fraudulent charge appears you can dispute the charge, while the dispute is ongoing you do not have to pay for it. unlike w/ a debit card where the funds come out of your bank account the same day. the credit company will fight on your behalf while w/ a debit card you have to do the leg work your self. good luck

Debit card is linked to your checking account. So you're using your own money when you use your debit card. Of course, you first have to fund your checking account with enough money. Otherwise you could get an overdraft fee.

When you use your credit card then you're using the credit card company's funds. Which you have to pay back.

If you shop online then stick to stores that you have heard of like Amazon, Ebay, etc. I don't like using my debit card for shopping online. However I'd use a credit card over a debit card for online shopping because your cc isn't linked to any bank accounts like the debit card.

I think a better option for online shopping are gift cards. All the major credit cards sell their own version of gift cards. You can put any amount on the gift cards from $20-500. American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover Card all sell their own version of gift cards.

So if some hacker hacks into Amazon.com's customer database and all you have stored there is your gift card # then you can feel safe. Because its not your credit card nor your debit card. Just the gift card.

Gift cards are very replaceable. I like using gift cards when I go to restaurants and you have to give the waiter some sort of payment at the end. When you give any sort of plastic then its going to be out of your sight for 5 minutes and I like knowing that I gave them the gift card and not a cc or a debit card. You do hear stories of waiters who steal someone's cc and debit card. So I'd rather be safe than sorry.

credit card you make a purchase and you pay later with interest. debit card comes from your bank account.

A credit card carries interest payment as you are borrowing from them. A debit card is attached to your checking account and depending on what balance you have, is what is available for use.

Both credit & debit cards have the ability now to dispute if the merchant doesn't deliver, or is a fraud. Even debit cards charges can be disputed through your bank, but I would check with yours first.

The big difference is:

Debit card - The money is removed from your account immediately. You are not borrowing money so there is zero interest to be paid. Usually there is less security

Credit card - Every purchase gets added to the amount you owe and if you cannot pay the total in full, you will be paying interests on the difference. Credit card offer different types of security

ATM/Debit Card:
Debit Cards are always tied to a Bank account [Savings or Current]. Earlier, Debit Cards came with a 4 digit PIN [Personal Identification Number] and you could use it to withdraw cash, view statements etc. They served as a Teller for your Bank account. These days, in addition to PIN and teller type ATM transactions, debit cards are endorsed by VISA or MasterCard and they can be very conveniently used like credit cards, but only if you have sufficient balance in your Account. Since you are using your own money, their is no APR [Annual Percentage Rate] or Interest.

Credit Cards:
Credit Cards are basically unsecured loans given to you by a Bank or a Financial Institution. Every credit card has a pre-set spending limit / credit limit. In India, the banks look at your Income Tax returns or your salary slip and fix the credit limit. There is a payment grace period [upto 30 days] within which you have to payback the amount you have spent on your credit card failing which you will be charged an interest on the amount used. Depending on your credit card usage and payment record your credit limit will be raised.

Lady Carole.
With a credit card you are borrowing the money, therefore paying interest. With a debit card you can only spend what you have in the bank, therefore pay no interest. I use a debit card.

(assuming you are in the UK)
A debit card is used to make a payment from your bank account whereas with a credit card you get a bill each month and pay some or all of it. If you only pay some of it then you will be charged interest on the balance.

When making online payments it is better to use a credit card as, by UK law, the credit card company is party to the transaction and if it goes wrong then, if you can't get the supplier to refund your payment then you should be able to recover the money from your credit card company.

The same is not true with a debit card.

If you spend on a credit card you are borrowing money from the card company. A debit card uses money from your bank/building society account.

They both carry some risk regarding online fraud.

his nibs is correct and to finish the answer either one. With most banks you are protected from fraud.
