forever charmed | What are some things I can do to clean up my credit? |
|

The best thing to do to clean up your credit report is to get copies of your credit report from all three agencies Transunion, Experian and Equifax and go over it very carefully. If you find anything that you do not think is correct you can file a dispute (they explain how to do this on the websites for each agency) Make sure when you are ordering your credit reports you do it from the source itself or a reputable company if you do this online you may end up getting scammed for your social security number. If you just have a low credit score but are paying your bills on time it could be because you have high balances on your credit cards. If this is the such try and pay down these credit cards as quickly as possible. If you get your debt down to less than 25% of your credit limit your credit score will jump up dramastically. If you are deliquent with items try and find a reputable credit consolidator to help you clean the rest of it up. This should be a free service that you should NEVER have to pay for. |

It depends on what your "problem" is--if you have debt up to your eyeballs, contact a debt consolidation program. I was very wary of this, but I have never been so proud of myself for doing this. They contact all of your creditors, lower the APRs (what eats up your money), your accounts are "re-aged", and you pay that consolidation company one payment a month & they disperse the money to your accounts. They got some of my APR's from 29.99% down to 8% & my original debt would have taken me 40 years to pay off; now it will take a total of 4 years. Just make sure you use a "real" company. I recommend "InCharge." Also, if it's not so much of a "being-in-debt" thing, pay your bills ON TIME, try not to bounce checks, & do NOT open lots of credit accounts. When a consumer starts opening credit accounts (a gas card here, a department store card there), then it's a bad sign to the creditors. |

Get a copy of your credit report for free from annualcreditreport.com Pay the stuff off that is on there, and start paying bills on time. Also, don't apply for anything that requires a credit report (Other than the credit report itsself) because it looks bad to have a lot of applications on there. |

The simple answer, pay your bills on time.
Your credit only turns bad when you don't. |

Pay all bills on time
View a copy of your credit report from each of the 3 agencies and dispute anything that you think is worth disputing
Settle anything that is outstanding
Work out a payment plan with creditors if neccessary
No new charges, get balances as low as possible to lower the percentage of available credit used, the lower the better |

pay your bills on time. pay off your smaller debts. Do not apply for credit until your debt is paid down. Have at least 12-24 months of reliable credit history.
Cut down on monthly bills like cellphone contracts (do pay as you go).
Try spending 1 year where you don't use credit cards at all to teach youself how to live within your means.
Most, not all, people with bad credit usually just cannot manage their money or try to live beyond their means. My credit was ruined back in 2000 because of back surgery and being out of work for a long time.
Americans have a real problem with living within their means. Even the ones that manage to pay their bills on time. |
