What are some ways (that won't cost money) to moderately improve your credit score?

Additional Details
I heard you can improve your credit by selecting the 'credit option' versus the 'debit option' when using your bank card. Is this true?

Your debit card isn't a line of credit and it does not report to the credit bureau. Using the credit option means you sign instead of using the PIN.

Pay off credit cards. Carrying balances of more than 30% of your available credit limit hurts your score. Paying off the credit cards is the fastest way to get a boost in your score.

DO NOT close credit card accounts if you have any outstanding balances. Closing accounts lowers your available credit limit and thus increases the debt percentage. Also, closing accounts closes the history which will lower your score.

Consistent, on time payment history will increase your score over time.

Pay your bills on time...

Pay all your bills on time. Get rid of "lines of credit" that you don't use. You need to cancel them with the credit card company/store not just cut up the card. Go through your credit report and make sure the information in it is accurate.

The biggest is just to pay ALL bills on time. If your cable TV bill is late, that effects your credit score even though it's not a credit card bill.

I set up all my regular bills to be paid automatically by my bank, that way I never have a late payment.

Pay you bills the day you get them... always.

request a copy of ALL your credit reports and dispute anything that is showing negatively.

Open another credit card account (but do not use it). The more credit available you have and not used the better your score will be (say you have 3 cards with a combined total of 10,000 available and you only have 1,000 used from anyone of the cards, they see you as less risk to default. But if you used 8,000 over them combined you are a higher risk to not pay them).

Also, never close any type of credit (card, loan etc) too quickly or it will hurt your score. Generally more than 12 months from opening (or longer if you can). That way they have good time to report your habit of use.

Make all your payments on time. And make sure you pay a little more than the minimum amount. Don't apply for too many credit cards. Once your cards are paid off, close the inferior credit card accounts - eg. store credit cards).

If you have credit cards keep a balance at less than 50% of the credit limit and make all payments on time on all bills

Using a debit card, even if you choose the "credit" option will do nothing for your credit.

In the UK - get on the electoral register.

Not actually a contribution to your score, but it does give proof of fixed address and will be the first thing banks (even mobile phone companies) check if you are on before they look into the nitty gritty.

Get a free copy of your credit report. Make sure that there aren't any "errors" on it that can negatively affect your score. If there are errors, dispute the errors with the credit reporting bureau that is reporting it. This is done by going to the website of the bureau, or writing them directly. The company with the incorrect information has 30 days to fix it, or it is removed.

Go to www. annualcreditreport.com to get a free credit report. This is not "freecreditreport.com" which actually is a subcription service.

Good luck.

Piggy back someones credit card that has a long a good history of charges. If they put you on their card even if you don't use the card.....the credit history from its inception will show up as yours as well.
