The prudential website has a really good budget planner, just google 'budget planner' and it comes up.

I'd say for the two of you, £100 for gas/elec (ie £70 and £40). about £100-120 council tax (scotland) £40 phonebill, £120 food, £50 house maintenance, £20 house insurance. Remember when budgeting to include things like road tax, petrol, cigarettes, TV licence, mobile phones, going out, take aways, clothes/hair, loan/credit card payments, life insurance (if mortgaged), and regular savings for things like broken boiler, car service etc. Try and also include payments to savings account for things like holidays, christmas etc.

For me and my boyfriend (we're 22) the total bill comes to about £2200 a month. Make sure that your total figure leaves you with about 200-300 a month so that you never run short or are living on the bread line!

The main thnig to realise is work out exactly what you will be spending, include every little thing that you take for granted so you know it's all affordable. The last thing you want to do is pay your gas bill with a credit card, or worse a credit card with a credit card!!!

A good idea when you get started is to open a 2nd current account purely for you direct debits, and have your other current account sitting with the money left over from your wages. That way you know your bills will always be paid no matter what, even if you have to eat beans for a week!

Hope this helps and good luck with the house!! xx

It is kinda going to depend on a great many variables which you either don't know yet or you haven't told us - therefore comments are going to be limited in their use to you.

Variables will include where you live - since this is the internet (UK & Ireland seems to mean nothing to Yahoo), it could be anywhere in the world - the size, type and age of flat/house, who you are living with, whether you are generally frugal with temperature, hot water, do you eat much and of what etc etc etc - the list goes on.

And then there are lots of questions about what companies can supply you with your utilities, what your local council charges for the services they provide .....

Sorry - don't think you are going to get much of an answer from this site - you need to do some web research based on where you are .... and thinking of living

I have lived on my own for many years and I would say that you should expect that if you have reasonable expenses without including digital cable internet that whole bit then you should come out at around a couple hundred a month give or take. Taxes are different bc a lot of the time you pay those once a year I'm not sure what your situation is. I mean just don't leave on every light in the house and take a bunch of showers every day and it shouldn't be too bad. Gas is a great way to go and will keep your electric bill down so that is a plus and everyone knows food is better when you cook on a gas stove. There are a lot of variables to consider so I'm just saying around what my bills are.

well.....after you decide how to pay the taxes, who's going to decorate the house, who's going to cook, clean and is there going to be a dog, cat, etc or a baby...........and you are still a family you'll live happily ever after.

Well, speaking from experience so far, we just purchased our first home like 3-4 months ago and I will list for you what our bills range from, but remember, everyone is different and it depends on how big your house is and where you live(for heat), how much your home, what you do at home, do you leave lights on or turn them off when leaving a room, etc. Anyway, we have our house payment, our gas which is well now in the winter it jumped to like $120~we have a fairly large house and it was only $30 for just the stove, etc. Electric is around $40 for us and water about $20-25. Thats monthly. And garbage service in my area is $40 for 3 months with a normal sized trash container. Taxes also depend on where you live and how much land, etc. your home is on. I would budget about $1,500. Hope that helps a little!!

This info can usually be obtained from the seller or the seller's broker. Often on their website.

It will seem difficult to get by at first (especially if you are on an average income) I found the first year so difficult, but as you start realising what your bills are and that the "pair of shoes you must have" really aren't that necessary then things become easier. I forst bought a house 5 years ago and my bills then were £600ish a month (including mortgage) My mortgage at the time was £115 a month. I am now living in a more expensive house and the bills are roughly £950 a month. (Mortgage is £300) if you get duel fuel from a comapny that will make it cheaper and alos look on www.moneysuermarket.com for the best value in gas/electric etc. (keep a regular eye on it as things do change and the company you are with may not always be the best)
