The point of fault, which came under scrutiny too late, is actually a big one. The general functions are researched and performed very thoroughly, but I think there is general agreement among high-level economists and experts that the board which is to review the Regulation T limit, very much as the much publicized interest rate meeting, severely failed in their responsibility in the 90s. If they had tightened the actual fund requirements for margin accounts during the early 90s' (they never changed it, incidently) we would have had a much more stable economy over the past 20 years, and a much stronger one today. |

The Fed isn't a private company, though. Private companies don't have to get their leaders approved by the US Senate after being nominated by the President of the United States. Nor do private companies get to use a .gov domain. Nor do private companies have to obey the Freedom of Information Act. The Fed is actually a independent governmental agency.
Also, the Fed isn't really in charge of anything. The FOMC sets the short-term interest rates that banks borrow from one another. Though US banks must use this rate for this purpose, it is the banks, themselves, that use this rate to set the Prime Rate, to which almost all other interest rates are indexed.
Thus, the Fed's sphere of influence is large, but their actual sphere of action is very limited.
It should also probably be noted here that the US Treasury has more of a direct impact on the overall economy through its control of monetary policy than the Fed through fiscal policy.
So, in conclusion, this American thinks that the questioner is confusing the facts. |

The Fed Reserve is the greatest central bank in the world. Ben bernanke and his boys on the FOMC comtrol the WORLD'S ECONOMY!!!!!!
further more oldman, the Fed is responsible for fiscal policy, never said a word about mon. policy--Lastly, the "manipulation" that you speak of is an effort to fend off inflation--or are you a rich old man and rising prices are not a concern of yours? |

Humm, well I guess I would say look at the other countries in the world that do not a central bank (aka. the FED). America is about 230 years old, a somewhat young country compared to some others like England, France etc. and we are the richest nation in the world.
I guess I like it. |

Sorry gs-analyst but you missed the mark. The boys with the fed. reserve are not the money managers of the world. The fed. reserve is lucky to keep their own pants up. Why do you think they have to manipulate our economy? |

It is actually a pretty controversial organization. America went through most of the 19th century without a central bank and most people were happy about that.
Local banks didn't like the idea of a powerful govt. bank and others worried it would be controlled by Wall Street. Eventually though both parties it would be better to risk the dangers of a central bank if it could stop all the money shortages the country was always dealing with.
Some economists dislike the Federal Reserve and feel that monetary supply is not a practical tool in managing the economy. They also criticize the Fed for really bad policy which made the Great Depression worse. However, the people on the board of the Fed are highly respected economists and with nearly 100 years of experience and research, they seem to make less bad policy and are gaining respect among economists.
Others think that the Federal Reserve is a tool of the illuminati or some other secret organization as part of a conspiracy to control the US or the world
I think most people are just impressed at the really complicated job that the Federal Reserve does and think the Chairman is super smart, though perhaps a bit boring (due to the subject matter, more than a lack of personality). |
