What does "Charge off" mean on you credit report is that bad or good?

curious caucasian
Bad it means the creditor tried to collect the money but was unable. It is a creditors way of saying we don't show them owing any money to us, but he never paid. This brings down your score, and negatively affects your credit. The only way to fix it is to pay them off and have them send you and the 3 credit companies a letter of deletion removing it from your credit report.

That is bad. It means you didn't pay anything and they got a tax write off.
Technically you are supposed to file any charged off debt as income.

After a debt is charged off, it stays on your credit report for 8 years.

AVA
It's negative. It means that the company was forced to write off the debt you owed as a loss due to failed attempts to recover the debt.

Charge off is bad..this is the kind of thing that creditors look at on a credit report. It means that the person did not pay their bill and the company finally closed the account. This will definitely affect the credit rating. It is very important to pay bills on time and never have any payments go 30 days or more past due.

It's bad...very bad. It means you didn't pay a company and they could collect the funds you owed them. This is a red flag to future lenders because it shows that although you previously were approved for a loan, etc you didn't fulfill your obligation of paying it back.

When you get into a dispute with a creditor over a fee or charge owed to them, they will issue a collection. At this time you will need to pay the amount due, or solve it with the credit company. If no resolution is possible, and a certain amount of time passes (usually six months), the collection will be payed off by the creditor, and it will be referred to as a charge off on your credit report.

A charge off is much worse than a collection because it implies that not only did you get a collection, but you failed to pay the collection. It is a big ding on your credit report, one the biggest, and will stay on your credit report for a good 7 years. That is, 180 days after the start of the delinquency that led to the chargeoff, and 7 years after that before it is removed from your credit report.

You should try to pay it off if possible, and definitely try to contact the creditor for whom the dispute is with to work out a deal. If you do try to set up a deal to pay off the debt in exchange for the item being removed from your credit report, do so in writing to ensure the creditor holds up their end of the bargain.

That's bad.
It's called an R-9 (R-1 being the best rating). R-9 means that the credit card company could not get you to pay your debt, and therefore, "charged-off" your credit as their loss.

This signals to other would be creditors that you're a high risk.

bad.....

CactusFlower
A Charge-Off is bad news. Anytime you don't pay a bill, it's bad news.

What that means is they may not attempt to collect on the debt anymore. Typically charge-offs are done on small amounts under $1000 when it doesn't make financial sense for the creditor to hire a lawyer and file suit against you.

You can expect your credit rating and FICO score took a huge, ugly hit with this :-(
You may wish to try to resolve this in some way rather than suffer the consequences for the next 7 years.

It's bad, it means someone did not pay something they owed, it went to collections and was never paid.

Normally this is a negative when applying for credit.

BOB W
Not only is it bad it's get worse. You are responsible to pay the taxes on the charge off as if it were normal Income. They will send you a tax statement!

Jason
That's about as bad as it gets. It means you have debt you didn't pay.

TIMOTHY D L
It is bad. They charged off a debt becuse they weren't able to collect it.

means something was in collections and you had a settlement (for half the amount or less than the balance) They charged off the rest of the amount. Not good.
