What does "charged off" mean?
I am in debt (past due) and many of my accounts are marked "charged off" on my credit report? What does this mean? Also, what if I am incapable of paying off the debt financially, but can also not afford to file bankruptcy? Does charged off mean the collection agencies have written the debt off/won't come after me? Thank you (how embarrassing to even ask this question!!)

Pete
Charged off means you are about ready to hear from a whole lot of collection agencies. Charged off means those companies that you didn't pay have decided that they can not collect from you and are trying to get a collection agency to collect any money they can retrieve from you. The collectors are not nice people. They will use every trick in the book to collect from you. They will lie, yell at you, and make you feel like you are not worthy of being alive. Don't listen to them, this is just how these scum suckers make their money. Good luck!

A charge-off means that the creditor has written off your debt as uncollectable. This is a big hit on credit reports and it can stay for up to 7.5 years.....After a charge-off the original creditor will do one of two things: sell it to a 3rd party collection agency, which will try to get you to pay....or..if the debt is large enough, they will try to get a judgment against you.

khepri
Quite the opposite. The creditor wrote it off as a loss and sold it to collectors. You are in a world of s**t. They are going to hound you. Track you. Unworldly harassment is coming your way. You will not be able to hide with unlisted phone numbers. They can get them too.

The people you owe the debt to has given up on ever getting their money from you. The collection agents can still come after you, whether they will or not probably depends on the amount.

This means that you are marked as a no pay. so they figure you won't pay and wrote the debt off as a bad debt which will stay on your record for 7 to 10 years. They may sell this bad debt to a collection company and still come after you for it and can do so for up to 10 years.

Charge Off on your credit report can mean a lot of things. One of it's #1 meaning is that another collection company made have bought it from it's current collection agency.A charge off does not mean that you do not owe that amount anymore, it just means that it has been transfered to another agency or account. As you may already know nothing in the SUA is for free. hehehe... Don't file for bankruptcy either. If you do it will haunt you for the rest of your life causing you to be almost unfinancable for the next 7 years or so. That means no new cars, home lease rental agreements, and so on. I advise that you get in contact with the debt collectors one at a time and let them know that you are not able to afford an arm and a leg at this present time but is willing to start a payment plan of like $25-$50 a month or whatever you can afford right now and go with that. Debt collectors all works on quotas and they would be more then happy to work with you on any payment plan. So just start with one debt and when you are finish paying off for that one move on to your next. By you calling and working out a payment plan, this will also help you build your credit while fixing it. I am sure you know that your credit is very important and it may even effect your risk of obtaing employment, if an employer should request for a copy. Oh yeah, and don't be embarrassed about asking a question like this one, a lot of people has this problem. I know I did, the exact same one as yours.

Marla
Charge off means you are a bad debt and the company puts your account to a write off account which is usually handled by a separate agency. But this new account is still a asset to the company and they may take legal action to collect the funds. Think off it as the lawyer accountant who calls you every day to argue with you and file court claims against you.

charged off means the creditor has written off the charge. It can also mean they have sold the account to a third party. If you have a credit card balance of $5000, often the credit company will sell it to a collection agency for a lesser amount. This sucks because it will show up on your credit report twice...

Fist off, don't be embarassed! This happens to sooo many people, and it's happening to more right now because of the economy. It's only embarassing if you don't care or don't try to fix it...

Sadly charged off means it has been sent to another company. Your best bet is to find out what companies have your accounts, you can do this by calling the original company you had your account with. (Don't worry about doing it. They get calls like this every day and they don't know you or your situations.) Just tell them that you are aware your account with them is charged off and you want the number of the new company to contact.
Then you get the mailing address of the new company and mail in a Cease and Desist request to the companies so that you "hopefully" don't get as many calls.
Now your next option is to either save up for bankruptcy, or start sending payments to those companies...This debt will not go away on its own. You have to get it fixed if you ever want to finance a car, buy a house etc. And remeber, if you get married or are married and have bad credit, it can really mess up your chances at owning a house...or refinancing one you already have...
I suggest saving up and filing bankruptcy, it's the fastest way to get this behind you so you can begin to rebuild your credit. Just remember that while it sucks and takes time, fixing this is a very resposible step and you should be proud that you are doing the best you can to fix it!!!

Good luck!! :)
