Nothing happens. It is just another piece of plastic, useful for putting protection screens on cell phones until you activate it. If you don't activate for an extended time, it will still be activate-able until the expiration date, but you won't be able to use it.
If you don't activate it and the expiration date passes, it will simply be written off and it may be reissued or it may not, depending on your bank.
I had an unactivated credit card for nearly 8 months, finally got around to activating it. Works fine.
But, it does NOT build credit for you when it is inactive... just as having no balance does nothing for your credit. It has to be active and have a small balance being payed off slowly (not all at once, but in installments) in order to build up credit. |

Its still an open account once you receive it - the activation mechanism is a security feature. If you no longer want the account, close it. |

You can't use it to purchase anything. You have to call and activate it - this is for your safety. If the credit card came activated and ready to use - but got dropped off in your neighbors mailbox - it could be used and the bill would be on you. Credit card companies got tired of people using their credit cards and then claiming it wasn't them because they never received it. And they also got tired of people calling them up and freaking out because they just got a bill for credit card purchases on a card they never received in the mail.
It's easy enough to set up your credit card - just call the number on the sticker and follow the prompts. You will done in less than 5 minutes I'm sure.
