Well, it depends on whether or not the decedent died intestate (without a will). See, with a will, or even better, a trust, a person can designate who will receive the car upon their death. If the person died intestate, then the State will determine who gets their property through the laws of descent & distribution.
If the person did have a will or a Trust, then the Executor or Trustee must go through the DMV and handle the paperwork to get the vehicle registered under the beneficiary's name.
Now, since most cars aren't worth a lot of money, you probably don't have to worry about it going through Probate, which is a very slow process. However, other assets such as real estate are likely to be probated if you don't have an estate plan set up. |

The car goes to whoever is in charge of that persons will. When my grandparents passed away the will/estate was divided between my mom and my aunt. My aunt wanted the car so she got it. |
