What happens to my debt if I die?
I am a 23 year old college student, I don't live at home, but am still counted as 'dependant' on my parents taxes, and included in their insurance.

I am wondering, what happens to all my credit card debt and other debt if I die?

I would assume they do not have to carry it and it is just wiped out...
What really happens to it?

If you die, your debts become part of your estate. Any assets would be used to pay off your debts. If you didn't have sufficient assets to cover the debt, the creditor would take a write off.

Surviving relatives are not responsible for the debts. Nor is the executor of the estate personally responsible for the debts.

Murzy
your estate will be liable for the credit card and other debt

The executor of your estate (the government will name an executor if you have not left a will naming an executor) will publish a notice telling all your creditors (everyone to whom you owe money) how to file a claim against your estate.

Why do you care? You are dead! But seriously, it will go to the person on your estate (spouse, family member, etc). The ywill not be wiped out!!

Most of the time it is forgiven. I used to work for the Dept. of Education and when a borrower died his family would send in an original death certificate and the debt was forgiven. Now, if the government will write it off I'm sure most other creditors will.

your debt is never just wiped out.
if you get married, it will go to your wife. if you both die, itll go to your kids.
since you are 23 and your parents are still claiming you, itl go to them.
