annathespian is right -- American Express Centurion Card (black) is the epitome. But who wants to pay for it?
I used to have Amex gold and have been invited for platinum. But why? It costs more and gives no particular benefit. So I have green again, and it says "Charter Member . . . member since 1958".
Turns out that my credit score isn't all that great because I have so few cards and so little need for credit. And what credit I do have is a credit union and USAA, neither of which report anything to the credit bureaus.
You can game the system -- there are lots of Web sites describing how.
Why do you want to show off anyway? I remember getting a free directory of Arab businessmen once, a Who's Who of the Gulf. One of the entries impressed me . . . with its stupidity. Under "memberships" the Sheik had listed "American Express -- Gold". |

Not any of them are proof you have excellent credit. Credit card companies must demonstrate that they are offering credit in the communities in which they serve. Therefore they frequently offer credit to people to whom credit should not be extended. |

Depends on what you consider "excellent credit." Many credit companies have gold or platinum cards with limits in the multiple thousands of dollars, but they also have high interest rates. Sure, you may be able to put $15,000 on your card, but at 19.8% annual interest, it's not a good deal unless you pay your entire balance every month. American Express has several cards that are "charge cards," which mean you are REQUIRED to pay your balance every month, plus they charge you an annual fee. They usually don't give their gold or platinum cards out to anyone with a credit score under 720 and an annual income under $50,000. So you could say that an American Express gold or platinum card shows that you have good credit AND good income. |
