EpicRacer | What is a good first credit card to go with? |
my first credit card ever. looking for something with low interest and i dont need all the extra services. my only major purchases are for 2 bikes - $1500 - $2000 each. everything else will cost less than $500. i make a little over $1000/month and i keep about 60% of that.
what card do you recommend? Additional Details i'll add that im 18 and ive been using a debit card for over a year (if that makes any difference) |

if you do not have any kind of credit history there is no way you will get a card with a low interest rate unless you are a student and apply for a student credit card other wise you will be looking at credit cards with higher interest rates and annual fees but this happens with your first card but you once you have stablish a little bit of credit you could apply for a better one. check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com here you will be able to compare all major credit cards side by side on rates, fees and rewards.

A good card to start with is one without an annual fee. Because it's your first credit card you're not going to have a good interest rate and that's why I'd encourage you to pay the balance off in full while you're establishing credit.
You're most likely going to start with a small credit line, probably between $300-$700.
Most creditors will want to see 6-9 months of strong, on time payments before they'll increase your credit line. And making about 12k a year, most creditors won't give more than 2-3k as a credit line.
If you want a 4k credit line, and have the available cash, I would suggest getting a secured card. That way you could have the credit line you wanted, have a (relatively) lower interest rate because of the collateral. |

No such thing as a good credit card.
They all can raise your interest rate for any reason. It's called universal default. Read the fine print on any card.
They all have outrageous late fees and over the limit fees.
Credit cards, like the fico score was designed by banks to get people into debt and keep them in debt.
A debit card is the way to go. It will do anything a credit card will do except get you into debt. |

Listen to hebulld.....if you are late on your electric bill the CC companies will raise your rates. I have seen CCs ruin more marriages than infidelity |

I would recommend getting a card with a small spending limit (like $500.00). I would definitely NOT recommend getting a hugh card and charging $4000.00 onto it for bikes. You should only charge the amount that you can pay off each month. |

You should go with whomever will give you one with no credit. It is a credit crunch and the guidelines for qualifying are tight!
With no credit, you are a high risk to lenders because you do not have a history of ability and willingness to repay. It is good that you do not have bad credit, and I am not saying it is impossible, but if a creditor gives you a chance your are going to get the low interest rates available to consumers with strong credit profiles and long term history of timely repayment of debts.
On a footnote, As an FHA Underwriter I think your actions demonstrate some very well thought out choices, paying cash for major purchases (those are major for your income level) that would lead me to believe that you have a good handle on your spending. I just wanted to tell you this because I analyze risk based collerteral every day, and creditors look at those actions as predictions of how borrowers will pay in the future. You doing a great job!!!!!!
Keep up the good work!!!!! |
