I own a credit repair company and I can tell you that "prepaid" credit cards don't do anything for your credit. Only secured credit cards show up on your credit.
The cards are somewhat similar in that you put a certain amount of money on the card to start with and you cannot spend more than that. But with "prepaid" cards when you spend money the amount of money on the card goes down. For instance if you start with $500, on a prepaid card if you spend $500 then your card balance is at zero and you owe nothing. But on a secured credit card your balance is at $500, that means you owe $500 to the card. If you do not pay, then it will go on your credit history as unpaid debt.
The reason behind this fact is this: Your credit score is a measure of how well you pay your debts. Can you pay them on time or will you be late? Can you manage your money without over-spending? With a secured card you make payments on it the same as a regular credit card, this will show that you can make regular on time payments.
As an additional note, you should know that when you get your secured card, you shouldn't spend very much money on it. If it's for $500 then buy no more than $100 each month and pay it off at the end of the month. This way you never pay interest. And it will show that you can manage your credit card without overspending on it. |

Almost all prepaid credit cards DON'T develop a credit history.
The best and surest way to begin building a credit history is to apply for a secured credit card with a bank or credit union. Secured and prepaid credit cards are different from each other.
Go in person or directly to their sites.
Credit card laws enacted earlier this year dictates that in order to get a credit card, you must either:
be 21 years or older;
or have a co-signer;
or can provide proof of an income.

go to your local bank and ask for a student credit, if not go to bankrate.com and look for a secured cards, those are the best cards to establish your credit if properly maintained, remember you have to put down like $200 or so debosit in order to open one, go to capitalone.com, personally I would avoid all prepaid cards full of scam... |
