Yes, the Citi mtvU card is a great rewards card for students -- especially those who spend a lot at restaurants and entertainment (5% rewards in those categories).
A couple other good cards for students are:
- Citi Driver's Edge for Students -- 3% rewards at gas stations, grocery stores, and drug stores; 1% everywhere else.
- Fidelity Investments® 529 College Rewards® American Express® Card - 1.5% rewards on all spending; goes into a 529 account for college tuition
- Discover® Open Road for Students Card
You can use this rewards calculator to see which of those cards (or others) will pay you the most for your normal spending profile:

As far as I know, none of those student rewards cards require good credit. |

Discover offers several cards for college students. Discover was the only company that was willing to issue me a unsecured card back when I was in school.
I would suggest comparing them through a reliable site like

This site made it easy for me to get get a card, plus they have secure on-line applications.
GOOD LUCK! |

I say that the worst thing you can do is open up a credit card account if you are a young person. Stay away from them like they are the plague! This is the voice of experience. One late payment to them they mess up your credit and shoot your interest through the roof. They make it so you can never pay them off! Stay away! |

As you are just starting so go for some low limit cards. If you can arrange for some cosigner then it will be better and much easier to get one. If you don't have any cosigner try some prepaid cards and then slowly build up your credit score by using it and in another year you will be eligible for a credit card. All the credit cards are good if you follow all their rules and pay on time.

There are many, just have to read all of the fine print. You sound responsible enough to handle it. Check the Student Cards on my site. You can compare them all and pick the best for you. AMEX is very picky even with "student" cards, don't know who can even get theirs.
