What is better a credit card or a debit card?

EC
A debit card is like an ATM card and a checkbook rolled up together. Whenever you use it, the money you spend is taken out of your bank account. You can also withdraw cash from the ATM with it.

A credit card is sort of like a loan. When you use a credit card, you are given a certain line of credit, say $1,000. If you go spend $50, that goes onto your credit card so you have a $50 balance and $950 remaining.

If you have a balance on your credit card, you have to pay a minimum amount back to the credit card company every month (you can pay more if you want).

It sounds good, but all credit cards have an interest rate. If your card has a 15% rate for example, the balance on the card will gain 15% in interest over the course of a year.

So if you have a $100 balance on your credit card, over the course of the year the credit card company will add another $15 that you have to pay off. It sounds small, but many people get trapped with, say, $5000 on their credit cards and have to pay an additional $750 in interest each year.

That's how the credit card companies make their money.

Get both, but only use the credit card for *emergencies* and try your hardest to pay it off completely every month.

It's like comparing apples and oranges...they are two different things.

A debit card takes money out of a corresponding savings or checking account. It doesn't allow you to spend more than you actually have available.

A credit card on the other hand allows you charge purchases and cash advances without having the necessary funds available. This can be advantageous if you need to borrow, but don't have the money at that moment. It can also cause problems if you spend more than you make, and get into a large amount of debt.

Well assuming you have a fair amount of $ in the bank then debit card is definitely the way to go, however if you haven't got any money in your account to debit than its probably no fun. In that case you could go for a credit card, however it your that broke to start with you should probably just stick to cash.

Other than the obvious reasons why a credit card is better, provides an interest free loan for the month, improves your credit when handled properly, and provides perks such as frequent flier miles/cash rebates etc.....anyone who has had their debit card stolen will tell you that they wish they had their credit card stolen instead. If a credit card is stolen it is really no big deal as far as an inconvenience...simply report it to the credit card company, fill out a few documents and it's taken care of....if your debit card is stolen and is used to make unauthorized charges it can wreak havoc on your checking account and be extremely inconvenient as you wait for the funds to be credited back to your account (sometimes as long as 10 days). The more you use a card the higher the chances are that at some point your account will be compromised so for those who properly handle their finances, credit cards are by far the safest and best option.

A debt card if you have the money in the bank, you have to watch this very close so you don't go over your balance.
Credit Card, if you don't have a banking account, or you don't want to mess w/watching the balance.

Wrong!
If you can afford to pay cash and not to go into debt, the debit card is your best bet. Debt is a trap. only do debt for things like mortgages, and cars. not clothes, and vacations.
