What is better for credit ? pay monthly to collection agencies full amount, or settle for half of what owe?

Miss Know It All
If they are at a collections I would try to settle and show them as zero balances as soon as possible.

Thank YoU!

Neither is better - paying off an old collection account or making payments on one will actually HURT your credit score. The older a collection account is, the less damaging it is to your score. If you make a payment on it, or pay it off, it is calculated as a newer collection account, and your credit score will go down! Fair Isaac is working on removing this glitch in their scoring system. However, even if they do, a "Paid Collection" is just as negative as an unpaid collection.

I say pay monthly. I tried settling and not only did it mess up my credit more but it also messed up my income taxes. Anything they write off over 600 they report to the IRS and you have to pay taxes on it.

If they are bills that are not disputed, pay in full.

Either way you pay it will remain on your credit report for 7 years.

Offer them one half if you are disputing.

to build credit, make monthly payments. it's a record of reliability. if you pay off all of you debt each time, it does not look as good as a regular monthly payment. so go for the half,, then go with a monthly. also, pay attention to your debt to credit ratio. never use all of your credit. only 50% at most. this and monthly payments make debtors love you, and give you a high credit score fast. And always pay on time.

It's always best for your credit to pay them in full if you are a able. If you are not able, you'll want to try to work out a settlement that you can pay in one payment.

Rarely is it a good idea to do a payment plan with a collection agency. Usually you are better off saving 50 - 70% of the balance, and then negociating a settlment in writing before you give them one penny.

Try to settle for less, but if you can't, I suggest you try to pay it off ASAP since they will keep dinging your credit with delinquencies.

To pay them off and If you've got a stable job with a good source of income, you might be able to apply for a loan through a website called Prosper. This site is a People-to-People (P2P) lending site where individual borrowers join in on the loans to help fund yours. The following is a link of a group that can help to walk you through the whole process:

Best of luck

Pay monthly if you can. Writting it off or charging it off hurts your creidt score.
