♥Denise♥ | What is better on my credit score? |
After i pay off a credit card, is it better on my credit score to keep the card open with a zero balance, or to just close it completely? |

Leave it open and use it for every day things, never exceed 30% of your credit limit in any given month and pay it off in full before the due date.
This will make your score jump like you wont believe over a period of months. |

keep it open and something on it, when i went to get a car loan my only credit history was on a card that had been paid off and therefore i had to get my mom to co-sign |

it's better to keep it open. Whenever you close an account you lose points. Also if you use it for small purchases and pay it off it helps also. just don't let your balance go past 50% of your limit. But credit companies like to see that you can continue to make payments even if it is not paid off. Maybe you could use it to go out to dinner once a month and pay it off when the credit card bill comes. |

In FICO terms, it's better to have more "available" credit, so having a CC with a zero balance gives you that, and barring other factors, should increase your score.
Let's say this account has a limit of say, $10,000. You have another card with a $5,000 limit, and you're carrying a $2,500 balance. In total you're using 17% of available credit (2500/15000), which is relatively low. If you closed the 10k account, suddenly you're at 50% of available credit, which is rather high (i.e. bad for your score).
So again, in FICO land it's better to have lots of available credit... but not too much. Another caveat is that those accounts must be active to really help your score, which means you use them at least every 6 mos or so. Keep in mind that the exact FICO formula is actually a trade secret, and is calculated using all kinds of info that may or may not "weigh" more than the kind of balance management outlined above.
Stepping back, however, it's better for you financially to not have any debt at all, and focus your efforts not on managing your FICO score, but managing your finances instead - they really are completely different things. FICO really only tells you how well you've used debt; the truly financially fit don't use it much, if any. Hope that helps! |

If you close it it will affect your score for a while then it will go up, you have to understand that the FICO score depends on paying on time and keeping a balance, so everytime you want to buy something, instead of using cash, use your credit card and make sure to set this cash aside to pay that balance on your credit card. |

I've always been led to believe more credit leads to more credit. Leave it open and make small purchases that you pay off at the end of that week will very much improve your rating. |

It is better to keep it for two reasons. 1- It is an aged account, it has been open for a long time. 2- It helps with your debt ratio, IE 9K of debt with 10K of credit available = 90% of credit line used. If you have 2K of debt = 20%. The catch on this is if you have a huge amount of credit card credit available 10-30K+ with no debt. The works against you since you could go on a spending spree and get yourself in very deep. |

If you want to worship the fico it is better to leave it open and use it. That's what it takes to build credit.
It's a really stupid idea though.
You have to borrow money and make payments on time to get a high score so that you can go out and borrow more money and make more payments paying interest. It makes no sense.
If you pay as you go.
If you live on less money than you make.
You will have money.
The only time you might have to borrow money is for a home. You can do that without a fico score. It's called manual underwriting. It's not a sub prime loan. It's how home loans were givin' before all the fico score worship. You can get the lowest interest rates available.
New cars are a rip off too. They lose value and you lose money as soon as you drive off the lot. They keep losing value year after year.
Save for a good used cash car. put the money you save in the bank for an emergency fund.
No payments=cash in the bank.
Of course the bankers, car financers, credit card people and, Loyal followers are gonna tell you different.
Debt free is the way to be! |

Keep the account open and use it at least once every six months to keep it active. A closed account, even if closed by the card holder, can be a negative on your credit report.
Using your card occasionally and paying it off in a timely manner will increase your credit score, as long as there are no late payments. |
