I would suggest a Visa-- since AMEX is not accepted at as many locations. If you're in college, there are some great credit card designed specifically for students. You can find a complete list here:

I'd suggest a Visa or MasterCard as they are accepted almost universally. Many rewards cards require an annual fee, but are they worth it? You already have to spend $17,000 to get a CD player!! |

Go online to bankrate.com and search for an student visa, it has perks and rewards just for college students. |

If you are using it locally, both is fine. But for oversea usuage, Visa is better. |

I would stay away from credit cards while you are in college. They have high interest rates and are tough to pay back. You are likely eligible for student loans which have lower interest rates and usually don't require payments until you graduate. If you insist on getting a credit card, AMEX is designed for people who might have large bills but pay them off every month (like business travel, airfare and hotel bills). They may not state a credit limit, but they will not allow you to keep piling on the credit. visa will have a credit limit based on your income and credit record. If you consistently make minimum payments, they will likely increase your credit somewhat over time. The interest can be raised if you are late on even one payment as high as 28-30%, so be careful! |

amex almost always charges yearly fees but has better rewars
also make sure you get an amex CREDIT CARD not CHARGE CARD
a charge card CANNOT CARRY A BALANCE
and visa is accepted more locations
but some places ONLY take amex (the really expensive eateries and boutiques)
at the end of the day if you are carrying a balance go with the lowest rate
otherwise take the lowest fees |

NONE! I assure you, you DO NOT need a credit card to go to college. My son is in college w/ NO credit card & is doing just fine.
