What is the best card to apply for for an 18 year old to establish credit?

How to Establish Credit

Begin by opening individual savings and checking accounts in your name. Over time, your deposits, withdrawals, and transfers will demonstrate that you can handle money responsibly.

Applying for a loan is another option, but be aware that this method of establishing a credit history will cost, since loans require the payment of interest.

You could take out a bank loan secured by the funds you have on deposit or by items you own, such as a car. You could also ask a friend or relative who has good credit to cosign a loan, which means that he or she shares liability for the loan with you.

You could also apply for department store and gasoline credit cards, which generally are easier to obtain than major credit cards. Before you apply for any credit, however, make sure you understand the terms. For example, how long is the grace period or the time you have to pay the current balance in full before finance charges are added? Is there an annual fee or other fees associated with the credit? If you believe that you will carry a balance, you need to know how finance charges are calculated.

Patience is important in this process. It takes time to establish credit and build a record of consistency in making payments to demonstrate your creditworthiness. And it is much better to go slowly and develop a strong credit record than to apply for too many credit cards or a loan that is larger than you can handle.

Start slowly, be cautious, keep track of your overall debt, and pay on time. Most importantly, remember that credit actually represents real money and has to be repaid with interest.

any low interest (10-17%) Visa with a low credit limit

when i turned 18, i got a MasterCard with a high credit limit and low interest rate. i figured i could spend all i wanted and pay the minimum payment every month. but as soon as i reached my credit limit the interest went to 26% and they wanted me to pay it ALL back at once.

be careful with any credit card you get. it's easy to get caught up in credit card debt.

Anything with a low interest rate, and no annual fee. Use the card a little each month and pay off the balance every month so you don't have to pay interest. Make sure you can pay it off every month. The key to using a credit card to build credit is you have to use it. If you just have it and don't use it, it can actually hurt your credit score. But pay it off every month so you don't pay interest.

If you are a student, it won't be difficult to get a credit card. Having a bank account helps, and so does having a job, but creditors like students... the credit limit will probably be low, but if you pay ontime it will go up over time

You can find a complete list of credit cards to help establish your credit here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html

Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to standard credit cards, they'll help you build your credit history and improve your credit score over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to qualify for better offers with lower APR's and less fees.

OR, if you're going to college... you might try a 'student' credit card. You can find a complete list here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/student-cards.html

Student credit cards are a great option and tend to have slightly higher interest rates too. But you'll pay less fees than credit cards for people with poor / no credit.

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

I would go for a small dept. store, a fashion bug or old navy or something like that. Purchase something, pay it off, do it again, pay it off, a third purchase, pay it off. After 3 or 4 months then go for a biggy like VISA.

The first poster brought up some very important, interesting and valid points. I would like to add a couple of things to that if i could. The easiest way to establish credit without even having to search for a card to do it would be to ask a close friend or a family member with excellent credit to add you as an authorized user to their oldest credit cards that are in good standing. This is perfectly legitimate to do, and often times the best way to establish credit. The activity from the account would be added to your report once added, that is if you're able to go that route.

Another route would be to apply for a secured card. This card is the easiest to get, however you would have to put a deposit upfront that's usually linked to a savings account to get the same amount of the deposit in a line of credit. For example, a $300 deposit gets you a $300 credit line. Now keep in mind that this is only temporary. And you can increase the credit line by adding to the deposit every now and then. You could think of this as building credit by using your savings account. The deposit is gaining interest just like a savings account, the only difference would be is that you woudn't be able to withdraw from the deposit in order to pay the card. But as long as you don't max out the card by keeping the balance low and pay more than the minimum payment on time every month, you won't even worry about that deposit, especially after a year of good standing it gets refunded back to you anyway and either the card converts to an unsecured card or you'll receive an offer for a better card. The higher you boost your credit line, the better it will look when it does become unsecured, as it will improve your chances for getting bigger line increases earlier and more often.
I posted links to a few secured card companies, including Orchard Bank which specializes in cards that establish and reestablish credit

Good Luck!
