I've never had any trouble with American Express (in fact, everything I've ever had to deal with them has always been positive).
They have an Optima Card (as opposed to the standard American Express card) which is like a regular credit card, that is, you can pay purchases off over time (a regular American Express card must be paid in full every month).
Another option is to get a Visa or MasterCard through a credit union, though you probably have to be a member of one to get one.
Be wary of the offers sent to college-age people from credit card companies, many of them have high rates. |

Hands down Citibank (www.citicards.com). They have the best rewards programs and the best customer service. I've been with Chase, CapOne, Citi, AmEx, Discover, etc. Citi is best by far. And they have student cards. |
