go thru your bank. when you are first starting out. the best way is to get one thru your bank because they are more likely to approve you of a credit card.

Best card is one you are approved for.
You probably won't have much choices since you are just starting out. Try Capital One (they're visa cards, I believe), they are easy to get a card from. You'll have a high interest rate and a low limit to start off with, but just keep using it and paying it off every month and they will increase the limit after a while, and you will be on your way to building credit.

You can't go wrong with Visa or Mastercard - they're the most widely accepted.

edit: Yes, always make sure you understand the terms of agreement for any card you get - the reason Capital One cards are easy to get is because they make an absolute killing off of tricking uneducated people (late fees, interest rates, etc). You won't have any problems with that stuff if you pay your balance in full every month though.

i agree, get a card from your bank. Dont get a card from Capital One because they do not report your payment information fairly.

I've used Chase mastercard and they've been pretty good. Don't use Citibank or Capital One. I also have an American Express but I've never used it.

A Secure line of credit trough you're bank is often a good route how ever if this is simply a way for you to build credit most department stores are 9.9 -16.9% Apr on there cards and report to the big 3 and established line of credit with JC Penny looks as good as a line with capital one* department stores fee's are between nothing and 10 dollars per year and require little to no credit to get. They also tend to help you be a lot less tempted to max out you're card ;)

Also some tips for building credit

Some people tell you to get a card and not use it, This is incorrect you will be paying a annual fee to do nothing for you're credit, you're credit score is based 100% on managing debt you need to have debt in order to build credit.

This being said less debt is better debt, spend 100-200 bucks a mounth on youre card and then pay it in 95% down, any legitimate credit line has a 28 day no intrest grace period so if you're paind off in 28 day's you dont pay intrest but once you pay of you're card completly you credit score actually drops!! So leave 10 bucks on the card at the end of each mounth and youre credit score will actually go up at a faster rate.

*Do not get a capital one card.

discover for startinng american express most accepted but youll ruin your credit

I think you should get the card through your bank or one of the major banks in the country (like Bank of America or Wells Fargo) Visa and MasterCard are the most accepted cards, so it doesnt really matter which one you get.

DONT apply for a card through some of these links in the answers above mine. The address of the sites looks suspicious to me and i dont trust them.

capital one has the best credit card for people who are new to credit or has limited credit. look for the "limited credit ok" ones.

Well, if your just starting your credit I would say a retail credit card first, or gas card, and don't use it. If you do, make sure you pay it off! Don't get caught up in the credit card interest game. As for major credit cards go for a VISA either at your bank or one that offers points. Or a Discovercard, but not everyone takes Discover if you are traveling.

Good luck!
