What is the best credit card for student starting college?

Almost all credit cards now offer online payment ablity, so that's no criteria for choosing a credit card. If you Must have one, get one that has a Fixed interest rate, not an adjustable rate. Be careful. I care for my granddaughter's mail - at her request - and throw out all the offers she gets because some of what seem the most attractive have hidden in the fine print: a set-up fee of $99; an annual fee of $85; a monthly fee of whatever. You get the picture. They want to suck you in.

Get a debit card and overdraft protection for your checking account; if you don't overdraw, you won't have to pay interest. If you do, it's like a loan - and you really don't want to do it because the interest will add up quickly.

When you are ready to buy a house or a car or something major, you will be asked about your credit record, so you DO want to establish credit. However, you can build credit in other ways. If your student loan is in your name, you are establishing credit by how you make your payments; if you have a car loan (even one that has a co-signer), you're establishing a credit record; if you have telephone or gas or electrical service in your name, you're establishing credit.

Better than having a credit card, if you must have some sort of deferred payment mechanism, get a gas card from a service station (Mobil, Shell, Exxon, Texaco) and a credit card from a department store that you know you like to shop at (such as Macy's) and use those to defer obligations. But be sure you don't spend more in a month than you are able to pay off at the end of the month.

Credit card debt is a bottomless pit if you don't keep it under control. Always pay off the bill each month or pay a lot more than the minimum payment requested.

NONE! stay away from them. I got offered many just because I was a student.

STAY AWAY FROM DEBT NOW! If you can't pay with cash, you don't need it.

Bank of America does a lot of student credit cards, so you can look into them. But I will be honest, if you want the best bank for credit cards...take a look at Chase Bank. I'm not certain if they do student credit cards, but they probably do, and their interest rates are usually better than Bank of America.

As the name suggests, a student credit card is specially designed for students and is very different from your regular credit card. Because it may be the first time for college students to apply for a credit card, most credit card companies designed their student credit cards to be a form of secured credit cards.

It will help a student to avoid accumulating high amounts of debt because of reckless spending. If you need groceries, or that recommended book but you don't have the money for it, then it may be time for you to use your student credit card. It is good if you start learning good financial habits from your student life itself. Don't use the card to pay for everything and anything. Use it judicially or it will land you in a debt to repay after the college finishes. I use Bank of America's Platinum Plus credit card. I really like BOA because of the online payment instead of messing with paper bills.

People that are saying none... don't listen to them. You need to build credit when you are young. Start off with a low credit limit if you don't trust yourself but having a credit card is a must to practice and build your history for the future. You want to be able to buy nice things on your own? BUILD CREDIT HISTORY, responsibly

None man. They suck. They end up raping you hard when you have to pay the bill. Save your money, pay with cash.

You should get the student rewards card that will pay you the most for your normal spending (e.g. Citi mtvU card). Then funnel most/all of your spending through your credit card(s) and pay in full every month. That way you'll avoid paying interest, build your credit quickly, and earn rewards!

Personally, I wish I were still a student so I could get the Citi mtvU card (which pays 5% rewards at restaurants and on entertainment).

You can use this rewards calculator to see how much each of the various student rewards cards will pay you for your normal spending:

Pretty much anyone will give you a card now, and they are all pretty much the same. Just be careful. They market to college kids so they can get you into a lot of debt. Make sure you use it as if it was cash, and dont buy anything you do not have cash for. They will probably give you a $500 limit or so to start and then ramp it up everytime you get near the limit.

The best one is any offered by a bank backed by your savings deposits. This builds trust, your credit score and helps you establish credit. Ask your banker about this.

The Zero Credit Card. It has a Zero balance and a Zero limit and you can buy absolutely nothing with it. There is no point to having a credit card. Pay for what you can afford. It does not help your credit out. When people are talking about credit when you buy a house or car they are talking about just that have you purchased a large commodity such as a house or car or loan and well you keep up with the payments.

Only get one for emergency use only. Before you get yourself in over your head, please see the movie "Maxed Out". It is very eye opening into the potential pitfalls you get into with credit. Remember to use credit wisely!!!!!!!!
