What is the best way to handle outstanding debt?
I have previously asked a question and have not got the answers i was seeking. I have a credit card debt that is over 9 years old. I understand all of the legalities of the situation concerning the statute of limitations. I understand that it will go away after 7 years on my credit score. I know it starts about 180 days after the first delinquencies. I am certain that this time has passed, since i have had no contact with any collection agency ever. Should it be off my credit report now? And How do i go about finding this out? Will I know if it is gone or still there when checking my credit report? All I want to do is start to build my credit and don't want this lingering on my credit report. Should i settle or just ignore it? What is the best thing to do in this situation? I have heard that once I contact the collection agency that it will restart the clock of it still being on my report and that it is best not to respond.

you can get a free copy of your credit reports once a year from the bureaus. If the debt is still listed on there, but is more then four years, IMO you are better of just letting that sleeping dog lie. If you pay it, it will stay on your credit report from 7 years of the date it is paid. You can actually hurt yourself by paying it, credit score wise.

Debts and delinquencies hurt you less and less as time goes by, so there's a good chance that your score is not being seriously effected by it anymore.

If the amount was big enough, the credit company may have gotten a judgment against you, and often you may not even know it. That is a different story, and a judgment can cause you to have other issues especially if you ever go to get a mortgage or something.

That information will be on your credit report, so definitely obtain a copy of it as soon as possible. GL

yes it should be off your credit now , you can request a credit report by going to www.freecreditreport.com and go from there! you do need a valid credit card or a bank card just to verify identity but there is no charge , i have done it !

i have heard that you can build your credit by using your bank.
Get a small loan $500-$1000. do not spend the money!!!!!!! put it in an account and set up auto payments to pay it back with that same money. make sure you put in a little extra to cover interest.

do this a few time so your credit history can show that you have been making payments on loans (on time) every month.

i have never tried this myself but i do have a friend that is doing it. she said that when you put the money back into an account, you don't have to worry about making payments on time because with auto-pay and it is just like giving the same money back to the bank and building a credit history at the same time..

Theoretically, yes- it should have fallen off your report.

Most places suggest getting a current credit report every 3-6 months.

Get a current credit report and look at it. If you have a hard time understanding it, don't feel bad- you're not the only one. Take the report to your bank and talk to a banker. They should be able to help you decipher it.

If the credit card company is particularly tenacious (if they've kept it current by continuing to report the outstanding debt), you may have to settle-- Come to an agreement with the collections agency that you will pay a lesser amount and they will consider the debt paid. It doesn't look as good on your report as a regular pay-off, but it looks better than an outstanding account.

If you settle- you may have to come up with a fat wad of money really fast to meet the requirements of the settlement.... But then you'll know for sure that it's taken care of, and that it won't be a horrific blemish on your report.

If you don't settle, then you don't know anything for sure. If this is the only "bad" thing on your credit, then rebuilding your credit shouldn't be too much of a task.

get a second job and pay it off. so that you know deep down you did the right thing. don't you want to live with a clear conscience. besides how would you like it if you loaned someone money but that someone did not pay you back.

Aloha from Down Unda!
In my unprofessional humble opinion, your focus seems to be on re-establishing 'good credit' which is why you're in the situation in the 1st place.
My therory is to focus on immediate & sacrificial 'Bankruptsy' under the provision of Chapter 13, US Code, to enable repayments of various debts at a reduced schedule & do not seek or accept any further 'credit' for ANYthing for 7 years.
At the end of 7 years, it will not matter a hoot in a handbasket because by then you will have learned that the credit system is designed to make others rich & keep the credit seekers poor!
Best wishes~

credit report will be following you till you die. and debt never will go away. in worst case, you will get a doorbell ring and you will get arrested not because you did not pay your original debt, because you did not paid all legal expenses added to your account by collection agencies and lawers, interest added, etc.

you have to be very stupid to get your self in this kind of situation.

best is to settle with agency, even they can be very aggressive.

in most cases, your debt got sold many times to different agencies and law offices.

run to mexico
