What is the best way to start building your credit. I'm 18.?
I just turned 18 in June. I was told the only way to start was by getting a department store card and then moving on to bigger things. Well, I applied for a JC Penny Card and was not approved because I had no credit. So what is the smallest step that helps me get credit. I have utility bills in my name, does that help me get credit? And I have a Mastercard Debit Card, does that help at all either?

Try your bank. Try a gas card. If you dont have money in the bank to pay it off, you may not get a card.

The best way to build credit it to start small. Since you just applied for a JC Penny's card and were declined, I would recommend:

1. Go to your bank - ask about a secured credit card through the bank that you use for your checking or savings account. Get a secured credit card and buy small things every money and make sure you PAY the card off on time EVERY month.
2. With your utilitiy bills- call and ask them for a letter of reference that you have been in good standing with them - Once you get the letter - send it to all the major credit companies like Equifax, Experian and Transunion. Tell them you would like these bills added to your personal credit report.

Be careful, don't call companies you have been late with - because once they start reporting to your credit bureau then they report EVERYTHING.

Don't apply for anymore department cards - their interest rates are usually too HIGH. If you want to buy something - use your secured credit card and then PAY it off at the end of the month.

The best way to get started is to start with what you can get. Normally this is a $300 credit card or a small car loan. Typically you will find they don't come with the best of rates, so don't be too proud to accept a rather vanilla offer. It is a means to an end. If you got turned down at a department store, I would look to apply to Household Bank. They tend to favor first time card owners. You might have a 1 time $50 charge to open it (which is applied to your bill, but you can pay it off and just keep the card at a 0 balance). Spending money is NOT nessesary to gain a better credit score. I hear all the time that you should spend and then pay off. While this is good practice, you don;t even need to go that far. You will be better off to just have it handy and keep it at a 0 balance. It is less tempting to use it if you never use it, and it can hurt your score if you have a high balance.

Next you need to work on a car loan. Most often a small credit card will not really do anything but create a "false score" (a score that is big but has no depth). Work on getting a car with a co-signer or save up for some money down. This is ussually the last big step in getting established before a home loan seals the deal.

And to answer the last part - A debit card does not report to the bureau, so it does nothing for you. Utilities can be used as references on credit, but they do not report either. The only rule of thumb for credit is that you have to borrow something to get credit for it.

Hope this helps!

Try orchard bank, the help people start up credit

I don't think either item helps but do not hurt either. Take one hundred dollars and open a savings with a bank. Add a little as the few weeks pass. Each time you go to the bank make sure you are noticed by an officer, the same one each time. If need be, ask questions. In about three months, ask this officer if you could borrow a small amount of money--say $75.00, secured by your savings which you do not want to touch. Loan no longer than 90 days, better if they will allow, 30 days. Keep the money safe, return it with interest in about half the time. In about two months do the same thing again. What you are doing is building a credit history with that bank. You pay back and you pay early. Bank's like that, other creditors will also--when they call the bank for reference, what can they say but you are reliable, trustworthy.

Okay, that answers your question--I suggest never to need credit. Stay debt free---then you are truly free. Jay

And once you get a card BE RESPONSIBLE, pay your debt ON TIME, dont charge what you cant afford to pay off at the end of the month, that will save you finance charges and a big headache if you stay out of debt.

Michael T
I would suggest to try gas cards and other department stores. Don't go overboard or you could hurt your credit in the long run if you are not responsible enough to pay them on time or if you don't have a budget created. You can find many solutions on how to improve your credit at http://www.your-credit-solution.com .

Good Luck!

Go to your banking institution and let them know you would like a card to help build your credit. Also, a department card is the easiest way to get started. Kay Jewelers, Gordons, Friedmans (although they are jewerly cards and won't really come in handy) but, Target is a great starter card with easy approvals. Not to mention there are things there you can use and put on your card. Also, Capital One is a great "getting started" card.

The best way to get credit is to by small things. This would be furniture.Something you can make repayments on.Be care full though regarding penalties for early repayments.
No those every day bills to my knowledge will not help you get credit. No a Master card debit card will not work.It will show you have money behind you..Good luck.Being a parent of kids who are going through the same thing i understand what its like for you.Once again good luck .Stay safe

I know how you feel. It was sure a catch-22 to figure out how to get credit when you need credit to get credit.

I cosigned with my dad for my car (you can do this with any family member who has decent credit. try cosigning for a credit card). When my credit built up, i was able to apply for a redit card. I used it only for gas and christmas presents. I paid the bill off completely at the end of every month.

I then bought a computer on credit and have been making higher payments then required and almost have that bill paid off. I also applied for high interest, high limit credit cards, activated them, and just haven't used them at all, on the advice of my financial advisor.

I have only had credit for a year and my score is on the upper end good level.

Also, debit cards don't help you towards credit. A cell phone that has you sign a contract does though.

prepaid card scores over credit cards especially if the owner has a not so perfect credit history.

The rejection is non existent in case of prepaid credit cards, there are no credit checks, no employment verification, and approval is guaranteed.

With a bit of dilligent shopping and comparision of various prepaid credit card offers, it is not difficult to find a prepaid card with no annual fees, no late payment fees, no repayments, and no penalties whatsoever. So, the ownership costs of a prepaid card can be negligible.

With prepaid cards it is very easy to promote financial discipline. Since you can only spend what you have, there is no overspending, and hence no debts.

Some prepaid cards do report their use to major credit bureaus and hence are a good instrument to rebuild credit history.

Prepaid cards have wide acceptablility, and in some cases they are even more readily accepted than credit cards. Apply online for a best prepaid credit card at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/PrePaid_Card.html
