What is the most sensible way to get rid of credit card debt?
I have about 5k on credit cards right now and they all have high interest fees. I was told if I paid them off in full it would damage my credit rating. What is the best way to bring down the amount owed and keep a good credit rating?

Paying your cards in full does not hurt your credit rating as long as you use it and pay it off the following month. Once you are in debt there are really two ways to accomplish your task.

1. Pay the minimum payment on all cards but one and atleast double or triple the payment until that card is eliminated. Then move to the next card.

2. Pay more than the minimum balance on all cards. Effective but it takes longer because of finance charges.

No, it will not damage your credit rating, it will actually help it. What COULD hurt your credit rating, however, is closing the accounts, which may reduce your average credit-line age, as well as reduce your available balance.

Credit ratings will climb with large, un-used ammounts of available credit. Plus, it just makes good financial sense to avoid paying interest to your cards. Your best course of action is almost always avoid being in debt.

If you continue to pay at least the minimum, your credit rating won't suffer too much. Not enough to worry about anyway.

My suggestion would be to eliminate all unnecessary expenditures from your life until the balance is zero. Pay the absolute maximum on the credit card balance you can every month. Then pay cash for your necessities.

Don't pay so much that you are short on cash because then you'll just wind up charging stuff you can't live without (like groceries) and you'll wind up going in circles.

But, be honest with yourself when you sit down to pay your bills and pay enough so that it "hurts" a little bit -- if you know what I mean. The amount you can pay each month will vary as your need for spare cash will vary from month to month.

Also, by all means, transfer your balance to a card with a lower interest rate if you at all possibly can.

You could try to find a card with a lower interest rate and transfer the balances. Or you could get a consolidation loan, even with my bad credit the interest rate was half the rate of the cards.

Pay them off ASAP and don't be concerned if that would give you a negative rating. That's ludicrous, you should make monthly payments and pay interest in order to get a better credit score so you can supposedly save money at a later date. Give me a break.

pay your debt off and don't use your credit cards

onsolidation is the best solution available to the credit cardholders to improve their future credit. People go for debt consolidation for many reasons: prolonging the loan period from 5 - 15 years and reducing the interest rate. Consolidation allows you to go for a loan with lower interest rate than the one you are currently paying. Besides it simplifies the loan repayment as you are paying only one lender in place of various payments to different lenders.

Who told you that ? The credit card company ? That's insane !

Paying off your debt all at once does NOT give you bad rating. However, it would not profit the company as well because they get their money from interest and finance charges amounting from your outstanding debt.

If you can afford to pay it off in one go, that would be the best choice. Your credit rating will not be affected. Anyway, why would you want a decent credit rating if you sacrifice your personal finances ?

If you can't afford to pay it off all at once, I would suggest look into card with lower interest rate. Open up a new one if you must, they usually offer balance transfer for lower interest to pick up new customer. But, for the love of God, don't think of an additional card as an additional income for you to abuse. It's a debt !

Once you've transfer your balance to lower interest card, start paying off the debt right at the minimum rate. This way, you chip away your debt, your keep a good credit rating, and you won't hurt your personal finances as well.

Keep in mind not to use credit card and watch your spending.

On the next month, altough your debt and minimum payment rate has decreased, keep paying the card according to the first minimum payment you made last month.

This way you'd chip a bigger chunk of your debt while maintaining a steady finances as last month.

Keep paying with the same amount until all of it is paid off. Usually it would only take a couple of months and you won't even notice the burden.

who told you that? you can pay off your entire balcnce and it will NOT give you bad credit. paying it off each month will improe your credit. but it will not be perfect becuase they want you to have balance for a while
