sugar&spice | What is the reasoning for employers doing credit checks before hiring? |
and can you refuse it, and can they not hire you because of a flaw on your credit- and how much weight is actually placed on a credit check for a job? |

Potential employers do credit checks because a persons credit report is like a report card in school.
It shows how responsible they are (or not), it shows public records like bankruptcy's, lawsuits & tax liens, it shows collection activity, it shows if the person is living within their means by not having a ton of credit card debt.
Poeple are creatures of habit, if you have not been responsible in your past with your personal credit, you most likely will not be responsible with your professional responsibilities either.
This would be especially true if someone were applying for a position that was responsible for handeling large amounts of money.
And yes you can refuse to have your credit pulled and yes they can refuse to hire you because you refuse or because you have bad credit. |

Your credit history shows how conscientious you are. If you have poor credit the thought process is that you are leading a risky lifestyle and could be a person who has a sloppy attitude toward life (ie, coming into work on time, not calling out and being a productive employee). Also, would you want someone handling your business who can not handle their own? |

A credit check is a testimony to your character...if you have some medical bills in collections I wouldn't worry about it...
What they want to see is that you take responsibilities for your debts, you are making payments on time and such. It tells them how reliable you will be (if you take care of your personal responsibilities you are likely to take care of your professional responsibilities.
For a job in the financial sector, they are making sure you don't have excessive debt...they don't want to put a person who owes a bunch of money to everyone under the sun tempted.
Yes, an employer can not hire or even rescind a job offer if you refuse a credit check. It makes them think you have something horrible to hide.
If you are worried about the credit check negatively affecting your credit do not worry...it is a soft hit and doesn't even show as an inquiry. |

The main reason is that people with horrible credit tend to have difficulty showing competency in other areas requiring vigilant responsibility, attention, and focus -- such as work.
Employer's rarely hire you because of a "flaw" on your credit; however, if you have a pattern of financial delinquency then why should an employer ASSUME that you will show up to work on time?
You have EVERY right to refuse a credit check as a basis for employment, and the employer has EVERY RIGHT to not consider you for the job since you are acting insubordinate BEFORE you have even collected a check. |

If you owe a whole pile of money to a whole pile of people, do you think a bank would hire you??? |

Are you serious?
You truly don't think they do a backround check at the same time? |

I think this is absolutly ridiculous!! Same has happened to me, my credit has nothing to do with my work background or ethics....it is your privacy, and yes, you can refuse it...but if it comes down to the hiring and they like you, they may ask you again to run your credit. Chances are though....you wont get the job if you don't allow them to run your credit. DUMB, I know. Also....they should only really be asking you to do this if you're applying at a bank. |

nope...credit checks are really back ground checks. They are checking for criminal history. |

A persons credit can become tainted for many reasons other than not being responsible. Take my situation for instance my husband left 1 day after I had surgery and was to be off of work for a few weeks so he left me with 2 car payments and a house payment. These were being cared for by 2 incomes but now only one so if the payments are late after so many days it is reported to the credit bureau and when an employer to whom you are applying for a job with sees that you were late on car payments do that means that you have bad work ethics? If a persons criminal background checks out and is okay, how they pay their bills is there problem. The main concern should be that their work ethics are good. People do illegal things all the time and never have gotten caught, they pay for things with cash so therefore their credit record is clean. But this is what an employer will hire ? vs a person with bad credit but good work ethics hmmm this is something employers need to think about because how you spend your money is your choice. we all were young at one point no one can say they have never spent their money foolishly. Should this be held over your head if you were foolish at one point and then later in life you try and make up those mistakes and someone decides you do not qualify because of credit report. |

when employers check your credit do it affect your score? judge me by my willingness to do my job responsibily not my color, credit, or any other outward appearances. Credit scores are just numbers that are controling peoples lives and people are ending their life because of this judgement people get over it and never make a mistake to pass judgement. We are all numbers or people? |
