What is the statute of limitations (time frame) for a collection agency to claim an old debt?

Actually, it depends on your state. If you do a search for "statute of limitations by state", it will let you know what the limits are in your state. Many states have limits of only 4 or 5 years.

Regardless, it will drop off of your credit report after 7 years from the date of last activity.

Keep in mind that any legal information may need to be confirmed by a qualified attorney, of which I am not. Hope this helps.

There isn't a statute of limitation on the collection of a debt to my knowledge unless you file bankruptcy.

Geez! Come on you guys! If you don't know the answer them don't waste your time responding!

You obviously don't even read past answers here either, as I've posted this information dozens of times!

See the link below, is goes into what the Statute of Limitations is and other issues. Each state has a differant SOL, so you need to check the chart. It can range from 4-15 years, but most credit card debts are about 6 years.

younggb77
none. After 7 years its supposed to come off your credit, but more than likely unless you intervene it won't

It varies from state to state and depending on oral or writter contracts and wether a Judgment has been entered or not.

Death of th debtor

DollyLama
State by state laws vary, usually it is 15 years from date of last received payment on the account, or Judgment obtained, regardless it is the latter of whatever activity on the account.

There is none. They can harass you till the day you die......Then harass your family. The limit is on how long they can take it to court. I believe that is 7 years. Hope this helps.
