What is the time limit for reposesion after missing a payment?

Auto finance is what I do for a living and it depends on the lender, but most major lenders will not start repossession proceedings until people have missed 3 payments.

As the others have stated, it varies, but on average between 60 and 90 days. It all depends on what type of contact you've had with the lender.

If you are avoiding the phone calls and not communicating, the repo will come sooner than later.

Keep in mind that the lender would rather help you if you're having temporary financial difficulty. When a lender repo's a car they lose money.

It's possible that the lender can give you a two month payment extension as long as you're able to keep the account current afterward.

Every company is different but from what I understand you need to miss more then one payment for them to repo it.

Depends on the lender. Some are one payment, some are 3 payments, some may be longer than that. Check the terms of your loan.

What type of loan is it? If you are going through a secondary lender (subprime). It could be as soon as missing your second payment. If you need your car, call them! I am a collections manager for a finance company and would rather work with someone than repo their car. If I feel someone is avaoiding me I will put a car out for repo much sooner than someone I have contact with.

viper_ej
depends on the loan but on average about three months. other factors can make it longer or shorter.

Missing a payment on a home is 3 months, on a car it's up to the finance company. If it's a loan or credit card. Pay it ASAP. But by all means communicate with them, don't leave them hanging. That is bad business.
