I filed for bankruptcy a year ago, and am now about to purchase a brand new home. Bankruptcy is not the end of the world, however, you have to prove yourself a little bit more than others. Continue to make all payments on time, keep them filed and neat (you will need to show these payments if you intend to make a major purchase) Start small with a small loan, nothing you can't handle. Get a small amount which you really don't need, just to prove you can make the payments on time. I make alot of payments with my Debit/ATM card, and hardly keep any cash on hand. That way you have a document record of all payments and purchases. Good Luck to you!

open credit cards like providian or capital onw and then pay them off every month and there you go

Depending on which chapter you filed, it won't come off your credit for seven years. You can start by getting a small loan or credit card and make sure you pay it on time.

Pay everything on time. The banruptcy will remain on your credit report for 7-10 years, so you don't want anything else bad on your credit.
Again, pay everything on time!
You will find that interest rates on credit cards, car loans, etc. will at least 2x higher than the average.

The best article I have found on this subject is located below.

There are lots of other advice and ideas out there, but let me assure you...there are no quick and easy ways. It's going to take time. You will find that loans will cost you higher interest.

If you went through Chapter 13 then you already know by now how to work within a budget. Now you use that knowledge, and DON'T abuse credit again.

Chapter 7 folks are gonna have a harder time, because they don't truely know yet what is in store for them. The results fo a Chapter 7 may go away sooner then a 13, but for the first 3 years it's hell. You are lucky to even find a bank that will give you a checking account.

Good luck!

Pay your bills on time every month. get a small limit on a Visa or mastercard and pay it off every month. Establish a good relationship with a bank in town, and get to know you banker. It takes 7 - 10 years to have the bankruptcy completely off your credit history, but that doesn't mean the end to financing. Check with local banks and find out what options are available to you. If you can borrow from a local bank, and make good payments, that will go a long ways toward getting you back in good graces.

Do not overextend yourself. On average, you should put back about 25% of your income for emergencies. If you are actually living on 100% of your income, you have no room for emergencies and unexpected expenses. Start small, and build from there. Get rid of unnessicary bills. It's strange how many people complain about not being able to make rent, but they always have a cell-phone. That's NOT a nessecity! Cable TV is NOT a nessecity. The ATV is NOT a nessecity. If you are stretched thin, now is the time to cut back, trim some of the expenses, and start recovering your financial freedom!

You should check out www.lifeafterbankruptcy.com. Stephen Snyder is the expert on helping people recover from Bankruptcy and begin the process of rebuilding their credit. He conducts free seminars nationwide and sends out an excellent newsletter for people to learn what's happening in the credit world.

In fact, many people who haven't filed bankruptcy subscribe to his newsletters because he is one of the few people that know what's going on in the "inside" of the credit industry.

As far as credit reporting goes, go to www.annualcreditreport.com and get copies of all 3 of your credit reports. You should begin by disputing any items that are not reporting correctly. Your immediate goal should be to get any account that was discharged in your bankruptcy to report as "Included in Bankruptcy" or to be deleted.

Once you have done that you should begin the process of rebuilding your credit.

Your goal should to be have 3-6 revolving accounts with a balance of less than 35% of credit line.(zero balance is best) and 1-2 installment accounts(car, mortgage)

It can be done within 1 year!

Good Luck

Go to three or four credit card issuing banks and start up secured credit lines. Put $200.00 in each one and DO NOT make any late payments. This will help you to re-establish your credit with your own money.
