It is never too early to learn the basics of managing credit but with that comes the consequences of bad management and sometimes that is a hard lesson yet it has to be learned.
A 17 year old person is an adult these days and I applaud your forward thinking.
If most young adults learned good credit management by the time they were 18, there would be a lot less financial grief in this world.
You can make the person an authorized user on your account or help them obtain a secured credit card which means a deposit must be placed in the amount of the credit extended.
Either way you go, you should consider keeping the credit limit very low. Someone already said; credit is not free money and it is never too early to learn this fact.
Orchard Bank offers credit cards for people with bad or no credit. It will be a secured credit card until that person can demonstrate a record of responsible behavior and there is the benefit that responsible behavior will get this person a strong credit score at an early age and perhaps that will be an incentive to keep it strong and be responsible at all stages of life. |

I don't know that you can get one being under 18, without a cosigner/coapplicant. Honestly, having a credit card at 17 is unnecessary. Even if you have a job to pay the balance, it's very difficult to be responsible with credit at an early age. Hope this helps. |

Some credit cards offer accounts tied to a parental account with a very low credit limits. These are good for emergencies. Or try a debit card.
Be very careful with credit cards. If you aren't going to pay it off every month or you don't understand compound interest, don't get a credit card. Never pay just the minimum balance. Remember credit is not free money. Credit Card companies are in it to money. And they make BIG money. At a 21% interest rate it doesn't take long for that cute $50 sweater to end up costing you $150. |

One that doesn't work.
Why would you give a credit card to a 17 year old? I know when I was 17, I was about as financially responsible as the regulars in bankruptcy court.
Consider this article:
http://www.daveramsey.com/the_truth_about/teens_and_credit_cards_3592.html.cfm
People everywhere are up to their elbows in credit card debt...and a lot of them started it up just like smoking: when they were young.
Don't think for one second that the 17 year old you are talking about will somehow be an exception to that rule. |

I have a child about to turn 17. She has had a "debit" Visa for 3 years now. She attends a school away from home and it is the easiest way for her to have funds to buy clothes, shampoo etc.. It has also taught her fiscal responsibility.. We(she and I) have a joint account but she gets an allowance and spends accordingly.. She has never overdrawn the account and I have never had to rush and fund it.. I think if taught properly and used properly it adds a self dignity factor when the children govern their own funds.. Credit Cards can be of the same benefit with a limit and parental controls. |

If you are going to get one, get a secured credit card. Their safer. |

I agree with the majority here. A 17-year old shouldn't have a credit card. |
