HSBC. My interest rate went from 14.99 secured to 23.99 unsecured after 18 months of never missing or making a late payment. I called, they couldnt give me a reason why so i cut up the card and payed it off. |

It depends on what type of rewards you want...citicard offers cash back from purchases, and airline credit cards (like Northwest Worl Perks) offer miles for free flights....look into something you'll use and something that will give you a good introductory rate. Don't settle for a card with no incentives. |

they're pretty much all the same. just look for the one that has the benefits you want (cash back, rewards points, frequent flyer miles, etc.) some have annual fees too. don't be surprised if your credit account gets sold by your bank to another bank and then your interest rate changes or your account policies. |

American Express. You must pay the balance in full each month, and that way you will maintain a good credit rating and not get over your head in debt. |

The ultimate CREDIT CARD to go with is NO credit card. I understand there are things in life that you think you need it for, but they are taking advantage of you whether you like it or not.
Our country is in a recession right now, and the average american is living paycheck to paybeck BECAUSE of these credit cards. Did you know on 24% interest, if you pay the minimum you are paying 100% interest !!!
Well I've been with American Express for 20 years, would they STILL charge me late fees and bump the interest rates up if I miss just ONE payment? YES, they don't care what kind of relationship you have with your creditor. The process is designed to see you FAIL, that's how they make their money.
So to conclude here, focus on your ability to save your own money. It's all worth it in the end. |

I work in the credit card industry manually reviewing reports to either approve or deny credit to people that apply, so I would have firsthand knowledge of what you're looking for.
It's not about the "best" credit card company to go with, it's about which one will fit you the best. Even though I work at a particular CC company, (WaMu), I have credit cards from other companies as well. From my past experience, a card issued from a major bank (i.e. Bank of America, Wamu, Wells Fargo, US Bank, Wachovia, HSBC) are attractive choices becuase they're more reputable that other banks.
My suggestion is to research as much as you can before making a decision, and ask yourself, are you ready to even have a credit card. Why I say this especially with the way things are now with the mortgage problem, credit card companies aren't like they used to be, take the game from me, I know. If I was in your situation, knowing what I know, I would get a secured credit card. They're a lot easier to get than a regular card because a deposit which is used as collateral is placed upfront to establish a credit limit. For example, if $300 is deposited, then the credit line is $300. Many of the major banks that I mentioned offer these. It's a good way to get in on the ground floor with a credit card without getting in too much trouble. You would be more likely to be aware of how much you're spending and how well you pay on time if your money was at stake. A secured card teaches you that discipline. Also, it's easier to raise the limit on them by adding to the deposit. Since the deposit is linked to a savings account, it may earn interest, so you can think of it as building credit with a savings account. As long as you pay on time and keep the balance manageable, you'll get the deposit later on down the line, which I would start up an emergency fund with especially with how things are right now with the economy. On the average it takes about a year or so to upgrade to a regular card.
I know that you wanted to know which one is the best, but really, that depends on you.
I posted some links to some secured card companies that you can take a look at
Good luck! |
