Whats the best way to build credit without drowning yourself in debit?
My boyfriend and I want to buy a house together in the next few years but the only thing on his credit is one apartment he had for 9 months. On mine all I have is some money I owe a phone company and a cable company.
How can we better our credit enough to be able to get a house?
Additional Details
I am never behind on rent and all the bills we currently have are all paid on time... Its just my car payment is in my moms name because i can't afford it if it's not.
the only reason I have the old phone bill and the old cable bill is because my ex fiance screwed me and kept my name on the bill after he said he transfered it...

Good credit will save you a lot of money when buying a house, borrowing money, car purchase/leases etc. so I disagree with one of the earlier answer posts. Good credit is based on having a lot of available credit for years, few inquires and great payment history. each of you should have atleast 3 credit cards preferably 5 or 6.

A great way to build credit is get a credit card with a 0 percent introductory offer for 5+ months and a small or no fee for balance transfers. Use a company like MBNA where they will deposit the money into your checking account. Move the money into a savings account and pay it back ontime over the next 5 months, then repeat. Never borrow more than 70% of any cards credit line as this will reduce your score.

Do not close old cards as this reduces your credit history. After paying back a card for 6 months request a credit line increase.

Have seperate cards for the ones where you carry a balance (low interest, no fee) and other cards with good rewards (miles cash back etc.) where you pay the balance off every month.

The most important item to remember is DO NOT PAY LATE. If you do miss a payment send it right away and call the credit card to waive your late fee. it usually wont go on your credit report unless it is 30+ days late. even in that case you can the credit card to remove it if it is your first time.

If you put a little effort 15-30 minutes every 6 months you can build great credit in just a few years. Remember everything is negotiable with the credit card companies, dont be shy to ask for no fees, lower interest rates, higher lines etc.

don't get behind on rent, there are programs that will take rent receipts. open just a 3-4 credit cards only, keep them open, use them so it will show a credit history...

You don't need credit to buy a house you need a good down payment, money talks better than credit. If you can put 200.00 dollars or more away every month you will have about $12,000.00 dollars in five years. That will show the banks that you can be responsible with money....good luck..P.S. even if they turn you down at least you have money in you pocket and not the credit card companies pocket.

Try to work with the companies you owe to pay them off if they take it off of your credit report. Get a credit card and keep a small balance, just make sure it's below 40%. Making payments will help, just don't get in over your head.

Work with a mortgage broker. They can help you to get a loan and know all the ins and outs.

When I bought my house, they had me get paperwork from my landlord stating that I had paid on time every month.

building credit takes time, thus, you could start now by paying bills on time and earlier than necessary. you do this by buying on credit even if you have the cash to pay for it and after a few days, pay off the amount after it has been posted as being a collectible. without credit, the interest rates are going to be so high that you will drown yourself in the endless hole of debt. rewards go to great payors and it is never too late to start now and over time, it builds up. secret to this? discipline.

Pay off what is owed (i.e., the phone bill and cable bill) whether you owe it or not. If they say you owe it, it's not worth fighting over because once it were to be cleared up, it would have done too much damage to your credit score.
Have both of you pulled your credit report?
What is your credit score? If each of your credit scores aren't greater than 690, you need to save more money!
How can you have a baby but not afford a car?
I'd get a credit card, use it it for VERY small things and pay it OFF EVERY MONTH.
NEVER, NEVER, EVER... let the balance carry over to the next month!!!!
Each of you should have your own credit card and each of you should have your own checking account. You should only use your credit card. You should only use your checking account. He should only use his credit card and he should only use his checking account. Each of you should be equally responsible for your monthly expenses especially on those things that would report it to your credit reports.

Note that utility bills and apartment rent rarely appear on your credit history.

Start by refinancing the car. See if you mom would co-sign the loan. That will establish an installment line on your record.

Get a couple of credit cards. Use them to pay everything that you normally pay cash for (utilities, rent, gas, groceries...). Be sure to pay the bill off each month!

A carefull budget is esential! Write down your charges so you don't overspend. Dicipline yourself.

If you need to get something espensive like a tv or furniture, try to get a loan from the store. Many places offer "same as cash" deals where if you pay the balance within "x" months you pay no interest. Again, another line of installments on your credit.

Do all of this, and in a couple of years you will have a decent credit score.

get credit cards & DO NOT charge anything you dont have the cash for, and send payment as soon as you get the bill; get a card w/ no annual fee, no service charge, and w/ a low (7% or less) finance charge. as long as you pay w/in your grace period (usually 25 days) you will not pay interest. in order to get good credit, though you must be very disciplined about your use w/ it otherwise you could end up in major debt! also- if you dont get offers, or have a hard time getting approved, try to get approved through your bank; they use your account history & if you've been a responsible customer, they'll usually give you a card. good luck!

Honestly, don't ask us, U should ask the ppl who are going to finance the purchase for U, they have requirements, and they would be the ones to better tell U what their requirements are and how to meet them. Even if someone were to tell U from their experience, the bank or lender that U go through might have different requirements for first time buyers than the advice givers lender. U have good question, make sure U get the best answer.
GOOD LUCK!
Don't spend a lot of time establishing and paying cellphone bills and such, most lenders not except this as credit for buying a house, but this is what I mean- unless I'm giving U the money, whatever I or anyone else says is just speculation and does not matter.
