This first step to building your credit is understanding how your credit score is calculated. There is a lot of good information on MyFICO.com that should help you.
35% of your credit score is your payment history. So, making payments on time (and even paying more than the minimum payment) should help.
There is no quick-fix; it will take time to rebuild a credit file that was damaged from late payments (which negatively impact credit). Late payments are a sure way to destroy credit, so you will want to avoid that in the future.
You should also get your free copy of your credit report each year to make sure everything on your credit report is accurate. If you find errors, you can dispute them through each of the credit bureaus' website (see below). |

I would tell you to apply for one of those gas credit cards - and when you use it - pay it off in full each month. That would be a good way to build a positive credit rating. Good luck! |

Late payments can add up to so much money...like $30.00 a clip every time you're late and plus the finance charges on top of that. Make sure you make the minimum payment due to avoid this. You may have to limit yourself or cut corners somehow. this is how you can build your credit back up by being on time with your payments. It's hard but it can be done. I'm not sure if you have just 1 card or several but if you have more than 1 you can probably do consolidation and make it one payment instead of 2 or 3. |
