Simple,

Credit is a loan product, you pay what you buy plus interest.
Debit, taken directly from liquid funds, straight from a checking account.

credit is a loan

debit is money you have in an account that you draw from. you cannot exceed the money in the account

With a credit card, you are purchasing something with the promise of repaying it, and interest is charged to you either immediately, or if the full amount owed is not paid by a deadline date. With a credit card, your purchase amount is deducted from your bank account. Most credit card transactions require your signature. A debit card requires you to enter a personal ID number (PIN).

Credit cards are cards based upon your credit worthiness.
(i.e. it's a loan)
Debit cards are based upon your checking/savings account.
(i.e. it's your money)

Also, if you can't qualify for a credit card, you can apply for a "secured credit card". These accounts require you to put an amount (such as $500) in a secured savings account that you cannot touch. They then give you a credit card with that same credit limit.

This is one way to build credit without paying that ripoff companies like First Premier hundreds of dollars for a credit card.

a debit card is based on money you have in the bank; in your checking account.

a credit card is more like a loan -- they let you buy with their money, but you have to pay it back.

credit cards traditionally have more built-in protections against fraud; but many banks are giving debit cards the same or similar protections. It is a long way from being 'normal' still.

The main difference is a debit is based on money you already have; a credit is money you will have in the future.

Every time you use a credit card you're spending money that's not yours. It's a loan, essentially.

Every time you use a debit card the money is immediately taken from your checking account.

It's better to use a debit card, I only use a credit card when I'm 110% sure I have the money to pay it back.

When you pay with a debit card, it comes out of your bank account.

When you pay with a credit card, it comes out of the company's money, and you pay them back later.

With a credit card, when you use it to pay, the credit card company automatically records it on your bill. You can spend up to the max limit. At the end of the month, they will send a statement to you, which you have to pay back. So basically, it is like lending money to your friend and her paying you back.

A debit card is a card connected to your bank account. It is like having cash in a card form, but safer, because a password it put on it before you can use it. Once you pay, the money is deducted from your account, so if you have no money left, you cannot spend anymore.

I personally think that having a debit card is better, because it controls you from buying too implusively.

debit cards are linked to your checkings account so its your money. credit cards dont use your money you use the banks or companies and develop credit once you spend.
