Mr. Blank
When Debt Collectors call, what do you say to them?
I owe several thousand on my visa, just under a grand for my cell phone, close to four grand in fines, twenty five hundred for impound fees, and another four grand for my car, so they're always calling.

Some of my favourites are:

- Pretending to be my brother (I don't really have one) I'll say yeah, he still lives here, but he's hardy ever around. Always out getting f*cked up on drugs. He's a bit of an @sshole, I doubt he'll pay you. Yeah, I'll tell him you called, but he's not gonna call you back".

- Telling them I've already made the payments, and I have no clue why theyre calling, and that they'd better check their records.

- Telling them that I'd like to make a payment right away using my credit card, then giving them a fake card number.

So what do you guys do?
Additional Details
I don't know where you all get off telling me I need to get out of debt. I was just wondering what tactics you used when dealing with the collectors over the phone. If you don't have any, then just move on to the next question!

Oh, this is too easy. Just tell that nice little Indian fellow that's calling that you are dead. Then wait.............and wait a bit more........until he asks you if you're dead, how can it be that he is talking to you. Welllllll, then you question him about his belief in reincarnation. Then explain to him, politely, that the person responsible for the bill, sadly, died last Tuesday. Then explain that the person that he is talking to now, while very much like the one who owed the money, is not responsible for the debt.

I actually did this one time. They never called me back.

Suckers!

I like to give them the spiel that I spent most of my adult life in prison and I just got out a couple of years ago and I can't cope with people harassing me all the time. Then I start to scream incoherently. If they're still on the line, I get real calm and ask where the caller is so I can make a payment in person.

yes, i have also used the "she died" trick...didn't work with me. i now just blast an air horn into the phone when they call...they never call back!

I don't avoid my debts anymore. So I'll admit to being more than a little out of practice on this sort of thing.

What I did was promise to mail them a cheque and send them my hydro bill with a cheque made out to hydro (don't use a current account, they can snag the numbers off the cheque) and when they called I'd pretend to be distraught asking them to send it back, promising to try and get them their cheque which I obviously must have sent to the hydro company by mistake and generally sounding confused. You can keep playing out this mini-drama for months giving them updates each time they call ("As it turns out I sent Hydro my cellphone payment, I'm checking with the cell phone provider to see if they got YOUR cheque this week.") and so forth.

You've got little to lose at this point. It sounds like your credit is trashed anyway. Might as well have some fun with it as it'll be 6 years before you can accumulate any serious debt again.

You really should pay your debts, but if you're determined not to you should at least have some fun out of the deal.

What is it you are looking for from us? Some cleaver comebacks to tell the collector?

Or do you just want them to stop calling.

To do the latter, simply send them a "cease and desist" letter. By law, if they call or write you again they are in violation of the FDCA and you can sue them for $1000.

I really don't think you can tell them anything they haven't heard already.

after my daughter was born, I fell behind and couldn't pay off the hospital bill right away. I once pretended to be her (my) maid or housekeeper. I also pretended they had the wrong #, she no longer lives here and the famous i already paid the damn bill to the hospital. Also, shes at work was one that worked a few times. Yeah, I'll give her the info, but she likes to go out drinking after work.

Well I'll save my lecture on irresponsibility for another day. You really should try to pay those debts though.

You can actually get them to stop by writing or faxing a letter requesting they stop calling you. By law if you inform them in writing not to call you anymore they have to stop. According to the Fair Debt Collection act:

"You can stop a debt collector from contacting you by writing a letter to the collector telling them to stop. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again except to say there will be no further contact or to notify you that the debt collector or the creditor intends to take some specific action. Please note, however, that sending such a letter to a collector does not make the debt go away if you actually owe it. You could still be sued by the debt collector or your original creditor."

When I got a call from a debt collector, I asked to work out payment arrangements, and asked them for the appropriate address to send the letter. Then again, I actually wanted to take responsibility for my debt, and improve my situation, doesn't sound like that is your goal though.

What do I say when collectors call? How can I settle and then I pay them, example if the bill is $2000.00 I tell them I will pay $1000.00 and clear my account.
You have to pay or they will take you to court and you have to pay the court fees, pay the collector and sometimes jail time also.
If you don't want to pay then for seven or more years don't use you s.i.n # and get paid under the table from your job .Change your phone number, change your address. Do not use your ID.
How did you ever manage to get in so much debt? Maybe your parents can help you. Good luck and think about what you are going to do because it affects your future not just today

Sure, you could be irresponsible and not be honest. People like you who play games messes it up for people who are honest and are trying to fix their financial mistakes.

Grow up dude.

if you seriously want to get out of debt and own up to everything go to daveramsey.com learn the baby steps and do them he also has a section on debt clean up

Tuesday
You need to go to Debt Consolidation loan. Where you make ONE monthly payment. Unless your just trying to get away with stuff for free.

The only real recourse the debt collector has is to attempt to get a judgment against you. Any other threats are just that, threats. They have no right of action other than to attempt to sue you in civil court - which can not result in jail time as only criminal courts have the power to jail people. Nothing else that they threaten is a legal action.
