Ummm. I would not. That is unusual. Did you actually apply for the card? I guess as long as you remember actually applying for it then you could consider it. It is quite possible, but usually, if there is an annual fee, then they just add it onto your credit card balance. I have NEVER seen this...and believe me...I have had my fair share of credit cards. Is there an 800 # that you can call? I do know that there are some pre-paid cards out there where you deposit funds etc and it helps you build your credit...but I haven't ever heard of sending a check before they will send you a card.

is this a card you requested?? some cards will charge a 1 time processing fee, and an annual fee right up front-- if this is not a card you had applied for, do not send them anything-- but please post the bank name

What is the card company?

Some creditors that issue cards to high risk applicants require an initial fee to process your card. These are not typically the cards you want to go for. They are notorious for inundating you with service/maintenance/annual fees, that leave your 'limit' virtually at nothing, and you have to pay it back to the card.

Be careful...

**EDIT** to "KnowItAll" above....legit companies do...AND OFTEN....require up front fees for unsecured and secured cards alike, for high risk applicants.

I have never been asked to make a payment before I used the card. The only reason I can see that they would want that is if it works like a debit card and you can only use money that is already in the account. I'd call the company and find out why they want the money before I sent anything to them. I have a BoA card and they didn't ask me for money to ship it.

You should never have to pre-pay to get a card. If you're approved then they bill you if anything. Is it a member fee? never heard of $34. Sounds like a scam.

EDIT: Initially I thought you never have to pay for a credit card but I was wrong. Bank of America will never cheat their customers but they can charge tons of fees for desperate customers. I would stay away from any credit cards that require upfront fees because there can be many more fees after the first one.

Who sent you that letter? is it a known bank? It sounds like a scam. Legit companies don't ask for money upfront for a credit card. DO NOT SEND MONEY!! Please post where the letter came from so everyone who reads this knows not to send money if they were ever contacted by this company!

Go look for a credit card on your own. Do not fall for these traps. You can find 100s of credit cards at the following site.

You shouldn't have to send a payment unless it is some fancy schmancy platinum card. I would make completely sure your bank sent that letter to you, maybe give them a call first.
