When is the appropriate time to use credit cards?
To keep from going into debt, when should I use credit cards?

Appropriate times to use credit cards are for

#1. Absolute emergencies, when your checking and savings account can't cover it.

#2. Small purchases to show activity. Ideally, you should make $20-50 a month just so that the credit card can report activity on the account.

It's important not to exceed 25% of your available credit when using your credit cards. This amount of usage is allowable by the credit scoring system. Avoid buying "perishables"(gas, groceries, fast food) on a regular basis. Once a month is fine, but it's not wise to pay interest on something that has come and gone.

My Credit card company hates me cause I only use mine for emergencies...they don't happen often...
Or sure once a month I'll buy something off line or pay for gas just to keep my account open...but never anything major and only stuff I can pay off with my next statement...

Does it work?
It must they keep upping my line of credit and I keep paying off the balance...But like I said at the start I see it as Emergency cash...not as a regular means of buying stuff

Using a credit card can be a good way to build up your credit score. The problem is you have to make your payments on time and you can't run them all the way up to the limit, or it will adversely affect your credit score. You also don't want to get in over your head because most credit cards charge interest at a rate of 18% or better. The best way to use a credit card is to use it only when you're SURE you can pay the bill off in full when it comes. The only exception to that rule would be in the case of an emergency where you just don't have the money to do whatever (fix your car, pay a hospital bill, fly to another state for a funeral, etc.) and I would recommend having money in a savings account for those "rainy day" type of expenses.

Use it only when you have the cash to pay off the amount in full on your next billed statement. If you don't have the cash, don't use it. Always spend within your means. Most card users fall into the pitfall of charging their cards based on their future income because it is so easy to charge it. You may be jobless or your income may reduce in the future. Interest on the card outstanding runs on daily and on compouding interest basis. It will snowball and snowball until it gets bigger and bigger.

For me credit cards are just an alternative payment option. It is also safer than cash. If you pay your monthly bills in full then you will not go into debt.

when you plan to pay the balance in full by the payment due date stated on the bill you will receive in the mail.

Simple as that.

If you have to ask when to use, probably never.
I would definitely use them when making a large purchase, because you are somewhat protected if you dispute the purchase.

I only use my credit card when I don't have cash on me. For example, when I have a car repair, and I already have the money in my savings account in the bank, I'll pay with my credit card instead of trying to figure out how much the repair will be exactly, and taking that much money out of my account to pay with cash. I pay with my credit card, then just transfer the money from my savings to my checking, when my bill comes in.

* I don't use my credit card for something I don't already have the money for, which is the key to staying debt-free! I only use it when it's handier than carrying a lot of cash. Or I use it online for purchases.

I use mine for everyday things like gas and food being careful never to exceed 30% of my credit limit in any given month and pay them off in full before the due date.

This way you can track your spending every month, use someone elses money to do it and never pay interest.

It also helps your credit score. I have done this with two cards for the last two years and have raised my score over 150-points.

We use our credit card for everything but we make sure that we can pay it off at the end of the month so that we do not have to pay interest. We use it so we get the "air miles" from it. We usually can get 1 or 2 free trips back "home" a year to see family and it only costs us the taxes.

Another good time to "ONLY USE CREDIT CARDS" is in cases where you have to have one to secure payment.... for example a lot of hotel rooms you can book but they wont hold it for you if you don't hold it with a credit card.

DO NOT USE IT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE CASH TO PAY IT OFF THE SAME MONTH!!! - this just gets you further and further into debt. If you don't have the money right now... don't buy it yet!

glenn
There is no truly appropriate time to use credit cards. The more you can avoid debt the better off you are.

Only use them if you can pay them off in a month or two. If you make a large purchase, then ok, but pay it off before using the card again.

I think credit cards are appropriate when you want to track spending. Example - you want to track your gas usage. I also think credit cards are appropriate when you receive a promo (like no interest for 12 months) - Despite everything, you need to really be responsible with them.
