They match your zip code to your billing address, if they don't match up the card will get rejected, this helps to cut down on
credit card fraud.

To validate you are the real owner of the card.

say someone stole or found your card and tried to use it.they wouldnt know your zip would they?well this is to be sure that the authorized user is using the card.most times when paying with a credit card, you arent asked to show an identification.therefore the c card company needs to know that the purchase isnt illegal.i asked a few times ,and thats what i was responed at the time of me using my card.

i was trying to use my card at the garage and the machine at the pump kept saying enter your number [ i knew it was not my pin number] so went in to ask what on earth the damm machine wanted..the guy said that it was a new security thing via the banks and that you had to enter the zip code of where the bill is sent to before it would process....so I would assume that is the same reason all over.........

I think they just want to see how many people from your particual zip come to their business.

jos :)
it has nothing to do with the card. stores want to know where most people live to send out advertisments.

I don't think it is a credit card thing. I think the businesses like to know where their customers are coming from

Stores that ask for your zip code are putting it in their database so that they know where their customers come from. If they find that they get a lot of business from your town, they will advertise in that town more often, or send out flyers to people in your town as opposed to another. It doesn't have anything to do with your credit card. But it's good that you are being self protective. Keep it up!
