When you apply for a credit card do you usually have to pay something upfront when applying?

No. And if they tell you to, run cuz it's probably a scam.

No, not unless you have very bad credit. If your credit is bad, you have to get, what is called, a secured credit card, which you have to put up the money in advance. Good use of a secured card can help you improve your credit score, but it is best to be very wise with your credit in the first place.

kcb
not always but if you have really bad credit or have filed bankruptcy then they probably will ask you but there are companies out there that you should not have to pay first.

NO!

If there is an annual fee, it will be charged to your credit card during the first billing cycle.

If they are asking you to pay a processing fee, stay away from them.

Amy_S
No. If they do...it's not really a credit card. More like a prepay card.

Not that I have ever heard of!!

I have never had to pay upfront. I would really check out the situation before filling out the application. It could be a scam.

Wite Out
No, not at all.

not to apply if you have no credit though some companies will charge you a hundred dollars to give you credit i did this with capital one when i was 15 and just started getting credit but just to apply for one i think not but maybe depends on the company seriously i'd get a capital one card they where my first and best company i was stranded in pruage and they bumped my limit a couple hundred dollars for me to get some food and a ticket back to the uk (im an american but lived over there for years)
and captial one is an american company so dont worry about any of that just get a hold of them

Jodi F
It depends on your credit. If you have bad credit or *no* credit, the card company may ask for a "deposit." This protects them if you end up defaulting. Most companies that have this requirement will allow you to earn interest on your deposit, so it would be similar to having your money in a savings account (without the ability to get to it quickly).

If you have good credit, look for another card company-- you should be able to get a card without the deposit. But, some cards charge an annual fee and sometimes this fee is due up front, but most of the time they just charge the fee to your account.

CctbOh
Not if you have decent credit. There should not be any fee paid up front.

Marvinator
Not on standard credit. However for a secured card, you may be required to put an amount in savings which matches the credit line. This amount would be what guarantees your card and which would give you the credit line.

lifesajoy
Not if the credit card is with a legitimate company.

neener
The only time you pay something upfront is when it is a secured credit card. This is usually for high credit risk people, or when you have no credit at all.
