When you buy items over the phone and pay with your credit/debit card....?
....the person/company that takes your card details,do they keep the details of your card on their files/computers or are they obliged to delete/destroy your details after the items have been bought?

yes, they do have a record of what your bank info is in case something goes wrong with a transaction. for example returned due to reasons like non-sufficient funds, acct frozen, unable to locate...this way they can research it and figure out what happened. If the acct info was entered wrong, or if you gave them the worng info, or bank error. It is really in your best interest. And remember: every time you use credit or debit in a store, online, etc: somewhere within that company they have your info. I do not know how long they keep it-but they keep it.

All companies keep your details it is automatically put through their database. TK Maxx have recently had their computer hacked into and people are at risk of their cards beings used. It was in the UK papers yesterday March 30th.

Every time you use your card, there is a chance of the number being stolen and used. This is true more now than ever before. Few merchant's look at the signature strip and compare it to the credit slip. Used to be you had to have picture ID if your signature wasn't perfect. If the charge is under $20 you don't even have to sign anymore. Don't worry about the companies using your information fraudulently. They would be too easy to catch and prosecute. It's the hackers, people intercepting your phone calls, cell phone or wireless home phone, (I could listen into your land line phone over the copper wires without your knowledge) the person typing in your number.
If someone wants your information....they will get it.

Citi bank used to offer an option of using cyber-numbers, a "fake" number used for Internet purchases only once and tied to you credit card number only in Citi banks computers.

Take comfort in knowing that you are only responsible for $50 max. (usually not that in an obvious fraud case) as long as you report it as soon as you get your statement. Read your statement every month and question any purchase (no matter how small) that you don't remember. Start keeping sales receipts to help.

Your credit card info is definitly still with the company...companies need this info on record in case of disputes --- However, if the company is Sarbaines Oxley compliant (More and more companies are...especially if they are public) it means that ONLY specific people in the company have access to your info (Generally people in credit). At my company the #'s are encripted as soon as they are entered so even the Salesrep cant see it after its entered.

They keep the information, just as the grocery store and the restaurant and everybody else would have to. Generally, catalogue companies take extraordinary measures to ensure that employees cannot commit fraud using your card.

yes it depends on the company I order through price drop TV and they keep the card details as I may order Agana

Different companies operate in different ways. I always ask before I give my card information. I don't want someone to have access to my card info and scam me. Some will save it however. So, if you feel uncomfortable with this just order from somewhere else.

All the company's I've deal with do not keep that info. I know because I've had to go back to a few of them to order something else, or make a return or something. And when I say just use the card I used before, they always say they don't have it anymore. Apparently, once it is authorized for payment, that info is lost to them. This is good.
