Cujo | When you cancel a credit card do you need to have it paid off first? |
I have a couple too many credit cards and I'm having difficulty keeping on top of the bills for them. If I want to cancel a couple of them do I need to have the balance paid off first or can I cancel them and then continue making payments until they're paid off? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. |

Yes, you can cancel them before they are paid off. This just basically turns the debt into a loan rather than revolving credit source.
You can also contact them and request a lower interest rate. IF you have been a customer of their for a long time and have had a pretty good past with them, they sometimes will help you out inorder to keep you as a customer. IF they don't lower it they run the risk of you cancelling the card and they lose money.
And for the person that said it effects your credit score? Cancelling a credit card is an extremely small mark on your credit. It's so small it's not eve worth worrying about, especially when a card is cancelled for you to try and be responsible and pay it off. If a card is cancelled by a company, that's really bad. A card cancelled by the consumer is not that bad at all. Infact, having too many credit cards can have a negative impact on your accessability to credit as well. They will factor in those credit balances as if you have maxed them out when you apply for a debt, so they can make sure that if you do max them out you can still pay your debt. |

You can cancel them and continue paying them off.
Why don't you just put them in a locked drawer and not use them? Less complicated and you get the same results . . . |

Stop and think for a minute, why are you cancelling them.
The trick to good credit is to have a couple of credit cards and pay them off in full each month.
Well, you're half way to good credit. You have established a credit history. Cancelling the card will only erase good history. Put the cards away in an envelope. Closing them does nothing good.
You may cancell them any time you want. Even if you are making payments. Why oh why do people pay minimum payments on cards --- why????

Call the credit card company I think there is a way for them to freeze the account so purchases cannot be made and you will continue to accrue interest and make payments. |

this should help you :
to ensure that you dont have to pay more , you would need to get the account down to a zero balance or else finance charges keep on accruing. Cancellation can be done anytime, before you pay off, while you are paying off or after you pay off.
I would recommend that you cut the card up (but you finally decide) , call the card company and tell them to put your account in a closing status. Then cancel all the direct debits from the account. Then get your pay off balance (the account balance and the pay off balance can be different) and complete the payment. |

You can cancel the cards and continue paying until they are paid off. I did that earlier this year. Good luck! |

You can cancel them anytime...just contact the company tell them you want to cancel and then continue to make payments to protect your credit. I know because I cancelled on yesterday and it still has a balance |

Do you really need to cancel them or just stop using them?
Why don't you just shred them or cut them up. Make sure you don't have any automatic charges (such as cell phone or internet fees) going to them. Then aggressively work on paying them off. When they are fully paid, you can close them if you choose. |

Most will allow you to cancel the account and continue to make payments. Make sure you call and verify this with each of the accounts you want to cancel since not all companies will allow this. |

Yes of course you must have it paid in full. Only close out one credit card every six months or so: closing them out closer together would be bad for your credit score. what you can do is call the credit card company and ask them to lower your credit availability. If you do this, they most likely will NOT raise it back up, whether you ask or not. |

Don't cancel them. It will cause your credit score to go down. Just cut them up. That way, you can keep paying on them but can't use them anymore. |

yes they won't cancel your account until it is paid off and even then make sure you get it in writing! they are sneaky bastards |
