Definatly not! Cards are only swiped if they are being accepted as debit / credit cards. When presenting a card with a cheque the shop owner will write the card number and expiry date on the back of the cheque to guarantee it's payment from the bank. They may also take the valid from date and ask for an address but there will be no need to swipe it.
If this has happened, keep an eye on your statements to make sure payment has not been taken twice. If it has you can get your cash back pretty quick from the bank.
If you have both a cheque and debit facillity, I would recommend sticking to the debit use and discarding cheques as debit is more secure, convenient and your not handing over your account number / sort code / branch address etc. to any potential fraudster. |

Mostly no, but if they have a rather posh cheque machine that prints details onto the back of the cheque, the card will get swiped and it will print your cheque gaurentee number on the back |

Some shops just write the details of the card onto the back of the cheque, whereas other shops swipe the card for the information.
If you have no money in your account they wont know....! (I know from lots of experience) |

they use the cheque guarantee card to check the details against the cheque, they will write the name on the card, the expiry date, the card number and the limit. This is to help the business trace the source of the cheque if it bounces. occasionally the shop may swipe it, but only to register that there is a cheque guarantee card |

Cheque guarantee cards never get swiped unless you are using it as a debit card. When you use it in conjunction with a cheque, the card number is written across the back of the cheque. Once that has been done your bank will honour the cheque even if it means that you are going to be overdrawn. |
