I don't have an open bank account or any other subscriptions..
But I got a call from someone saying I owned an amount.. He wouldn't tell me where he was from - just said he'd call back later. Sounded shady.
I lost 2 SS cards, unfortunately, but I would like to check my credit.
It's required by law to give out free credit information, correct?

Don't let them trick you into buying anything it should be completely free. You don't even need to give them a credit card. If you want to see your credit score which is completely different it will cost you some though.
Edit: Yes, you get one free credit report check free per year it is the law. But checking your credit score is different and that is not free. |

You are allowed to check your credit for FREE 1x a year. You get three reports Experian, Trans Union, and Equfax. If you want to see your score it will cost you but you can read and print everything on all three reports. They track the dates you checked the reports so if it has not been a year to date you will have to pay or call for more information. |

BE VERY CAREFULL!!!!! You could go to freecredit report.com, but....they only give you one score and you have to pay for the rest. They suck you into it almost everywhere online. But there is good news!! If you go to the three credit reporting bureaus such as Experian, Transunion, and Equifax, they HAVE to give a free credit report every six months, or when you apply for credit. They will ask you wether or not you want to look at it online, or sent to you by mail. UNFORTUNATELY, if you want the score, you'll probably have to pay. My advise would be to go to their websites and look at your credit to clean it up, then when you you go into a bank to apply for something, have them tell you your scores!!! |

www.annualcreditreport.com --- that's what I did 2 days ago.. but they only give you the report for free (once a year). If you want to see your score, you need to pay extra $$$. but it's better than nothing. Right? |

You get three free credit reports a year from each of the three major buraeus (equifax, experian and transunion) Call them! Then if the account is not yours you can dispute it on your credit report. |
