When you order, you need to provide your name, address, Social Security number, and date of birth. To verify your identity, you may need to provide some information that only you would know, like the amount of your monthly mortgage payment. |

After you are turned down for credit or informed that your identity may have been stolen, you go to the credit agencies (Equifax is the one I can remember--there are three of them) to get your free report. If you haven't been turned down for credit or in certain other situations, you aren't entitled to a free one, but can get one from a place that tries to get you to subscribe to their service (you have to cancel after you get the free one or they charge you when they send you another next month). |
