It depends on the service requested and paid for. As stated most are scanned and destroyed once the transfer is approved.
A sample number are withdrawn by security and checked these are then kept as hard copy for a specified period.
Some customers have all checks returned to their parent office and returned, for a fee. |

They go to cheque heaven, where they are rubbed soothingly with scented nut oils and soon become transparent, which is the origin of the phrase "the cheque has cleared". |

I'll tell u what happens to ur cheque once u pay it in with me, cause i work in a bank. once i put it through, i put it in my posted work along with credit slips u use to pay in cash, receipts for withdrawals and paying in of cash. At the end of the day i check it to see i haven't put anything else in there other than wat i listed above, band it and it gets sent to the LPC (Local Processing Centre) In LPC they store the posted work for some time in their archives. If there's any disrepancies then we can apply to have the posted work back. After a few years or so they get disposed of in confidential waste. |

With the new "Check 21" system, your local bank never receives your checks. Instead, the "cashing bank" scans the checks into a digital imaging system and shreds them. The check then only exists in the digital world. The cashing bank sends a copy of it to your bank. After a set amount of time (I think it's 7 years) the records are deleted... |

the bank will keep them in storage (for various purposes eg, audit, documentation as per statutory requirement as well as bank's policy) they will keep for a specific length of time (in year) as per the central bank's statutory requirement or even the Tax authority requirement) |

they are left in black bin bags and left out the back so we can all be victims of fraud because the banks dont earn a lot of money to act properly thats why when you ring them your call will be put through to india and you can talk about your account and all your personal details inc passwords to somebody who can barely speak english so you have to repeat everything several times- who then may sell your information on for the price of a take-away curry, and i think hsbc made 2 billion pounds last year, i feel sorry if a elderly person has to call thier bank, i suppose they have to have these call centres in india has 2 billion profit is just not enough to employ english people who by the way pay thier wages. |

They are photo-copied and stored at the banks head office for only six years!!! I am currently chasing cheques cashed by a fraudster and i think its only the Halifax that keeps cheque copies for longer than 6 years. |

Some get returned to the write with their statement after being microfilmed. Some are microfilmed and destroyed by the receiving bank. After the invention of microfile, no banks save the actual checks. Some are scanned where they are deposited and the image is sent to the writer's bank where it is saved in lieu of microfilm (and frequently made available to the writer as a statement insert or online.) This last one is on it's way to being universal, but it is being phased in. |

To be a little facetious, a lot of the big banks just throw them in the bin, for anyone who fancies delving in to pinch! In theory they are supposed to shred the cheques and other unneeded paperwork. :-> |
