I just read an article about this. The article recommended that people use a credit card for online purchases. That way, if your purchase price is incorrect, or if you never receive the purchase or if the purchase is of poor quality, you'll have the right to dispute the charges through the credit card company if you can't resolve the issue with the merchant.

A credit card is safer. You have more consumer protection behind you to protest extra fees. I only use sites that I am familiar with.

Both cards are safe to use online but I prefer credit cards because if there happen to be any fradulent charges, you can refuse to pay them. With a debit card, the money is already gone from your account and you have to work with you bank to get it back. Mostly debit cards should only be used for in person transactions in order to avoid hackers and fraud.

I've always heard the financial gurus say to use your credit not debit. If someone gets your debit account number they then have access to your entire checking accout. A little scary. Credit card companies usually have people watching for suspicious things.

Credit card is safer. You can be held liable for up to $50 in fraud charges on credit cards, but up to $500 from checking accounts/debit cards. Most credit card issuers actually have a "$0 Fraud Liability" policy as well.

The other important point is with a credit card, criminals are stealing the bank's money (that the bank is lending to you). With a debit card, criminals are stealing YOUR money, right out of your checking account.

I prefer credit card.

When you shop or typing in your card info make sure at the address bar it says https:// ("s" after http means secure) also look for the padlock sign meaning the page is encrypted). Some shows verisign.

Whe you shop online the regular page will display http:// but once you make or input your card information it should changed to https://... (meaning it's secure).

Do not store your credit info in the store site. Some store require you to store it because some the purchase is pending but once it's processed delete your card information. Most site where I purchased require the 3 digit security# at the back of the card even if you store your card info. I still prefer to delete my billing info after purchased has been processed.

Well if you have on your debit card only like $200, it is safer because if someone else (thief) uses it there is a limit. If someone uses your credit card, he or she can use as much as he or she wants to, because it has no limit unless, the credit card company is alerted that you ran out of limit (but believe me, they don't want to know this - they want your money so they're not going to alert you of this).

Dibet, because there is no interrest or monthly bill you have to pay afterwards. When your purchasing something on a website be sure to look down the bottom or top of the screen where the tool bars are to see if there is a picture of a security lock.

I believe that for safety, a credit card is the safest to use because you would most likely be covered for purchases that you didn't make/ theft, etc. as Credit cards offer that protection. However, you may want to check with your bank to see what their policy is regarding theft and your debit card. Another reason to use the credit card is that if someone does get your credit card # and charges things to your card, you will not be out the money while it is investigated by the credit card company. If they get access to your debit card, they have access to everything in your account and could empty it, leaving you with nothing while it's investigated.
As for safe sites, always check out the site's security policies. If they don't even mention a policy then take a pass on the site. Stick with well known sites. Investigate a little if you have too.
Take care.

I think a debit card. I have more of a limit on my credit card than I keep in my checking account intentionally. If something goes wrong, I don't have that much money to lose.

It makes no difference at all. If the website is safe, one you can trust, your transaction is safe.
