Get a pre-paid. You put money on the card, then spend the money. It'll help your credit score, but keep you from owing.

Any one that has a low interest rate and read the fine print where they don't charge you a monthly charge no matter whether you have a balance or not. My first was a J. C. Penneys card then a Mastercard. |

Whichever would actually let you have one. You need to have some sort of credit to even get one with a good apr and no yearly fee. |

If you're a college student, then either the Citi mtvU card or the Citi Driver's Edge for College Students. Both are great rewards cards, but for different spending profiles.
Otherwise, get one of the Capital One cards for people with limited credit that also pays rewards.
You can use this rewards calculator to see which rewards cards will pay you the most for your normal spending profile. It has cards for both college students and non-students:

It really depends on you as an individual. I would compare several cards and make sure that you are choosing the right card for you.
http://www.rightcharge.org makes it easy to compare cards and apply online with a secure application. |

Compare different credit card offers and choose the right one. However, l would suggest you apply for a card with low interest rate, no annual fees, and rewards. Both Discover and Capital One offers great rewards.

If you can control yourself to only use them in an emergency you might not fall into their trap, but I doubt that you can. |
